iphone
iphone sucks. Overall the phone is "pretty" and has that apple glow to it. But just like their computers, it is all form over function. It took them 3 generations to add a copy/paste "feature". My first smartphone had that built in as well as my palm from late 90's. They say the appstore is the best smartphone program depository... Well for the iphone, yes. Because it is the ONLY place. For my Windows Mobile smartphones I can get it from pretty much anywhere, and I can make my own simply. Pretty much all of them are free too compared with Apple's motto of charging. AT&T requires you to buy their iPhone data plan which is essentially the same as the mediaNet package they already offer but more expensive and just for iphones with no beneifts. So every month you pay more for less. The web browser on the iPhone is Safari, which to begin with is really slow and craptastic. Now it gets even better since Apple and Adobe got into a fight and Adobe wont let Apple use Flash on the phone. So every website that uses flash which is pretty much all of them, as well as almost all online games will never be supported on the iphone. Top that off with Apple's overzealous automatic updates that seem to overwrite some users settings at random (and they cannot be turned off) and you are left with an expensive yet shiny phone. Not a true smartphone.
If you want it just to be in the "in crowd" then it is the thing to buy right now. Just like the ipod is the mp3 player to buy even though it is really middle of the line when compared with other mp3players.
So coming from a long time geek, computer professional, electrical engineer, and computer engineer... iPhone sucks.
I'm gonna say go for it. I have an Iphone and I pretty much love it. The comments about emphasizing visual appeal and "form" over function are completely true, but that's kind of the point I think. I don't think owning an Iphone has anything to do with being in the "in" crowd or not - it doesn't really give people enough credit. People see how easy it is to use an how you can still do a lot with it, and they want one. I've seen people who can't figure out how to turn on a computer pickup an Iphone and actually use some of the stuff on it. The fact that it's stylish too shouldn't really be held against it.
Being a techie person, there's still plenty to do to keep it exciting. I have Orb setup on my computer, so I can watch hundreds of TV channels anywhere I can get a cell phone signal. I have a gym app that has something like 200 exercises with little videos on how to do them all that also lets me keep track of my workouts. It uses the batttery up fast, but being able to listen to Pandora, Slacker, or Last.fm while I'm working out is AMAZING. And to be fair, some of this stuff can be done on other phones, but it isn't done as well. The other really cool thing that pretty much amazes people is that my bank, USAA, lets me deposit checks using the Iphone camera. I snap a picture of the check and it shows up in my account instantly. Everyone once in awhile I'll miss one of the obscure features I had on an older phone, but everything else about it is really awesome.
The only bad thing is that AT&T is expensive no matter how you look at it. All of their smartphones are, unless you do some SIM trickery or get a feature loaded dumbphone.
That being said, I love my HTC Fuze. It's got the Windows Mobile operating system, and I can do tons of cool stuff with it too. Yes, it's easier to acquire an app on the iPhone, but it can be done, and works better on my Fuze. The BF uses his iPhone for both work and personal stuff, but I think my phone is way more suited for the young professional.
In my opinion, the bottom line comes down to this: What do you want your phone to do for you?
Don't go for something because it's pretty (and yes, the iPhone is gorgeous). Go for something that suits your needs. If the iPhone does what you want, get the iPhone. If you need something different, shop accordingly.
Good Luck!
If you want to get somewhere you have to know where you want to go and how to get there. Then never, never, never, give up!
