Reasons for WLS

I was wondering what other people reasons were for considering WLS.

Mine are very personal and honestly I hope that will help.
  Reasons for RNY:
1. ACL Repair in Left knee and weight is not making it any better. It hurts so much at times I think that I tore it again.
2. Swelling in ankles and feet. My feet hurt after about a hour of standing.
3. Swelling in knee.
4. Mother and her side of the family all have Diabetes and are suffering from Complications that are out of their control. I don't ever want to have to deal with that and I and I am scared to death of the future if I continue down this path.
5. High Blood Pressure
6. Asthma and Allergies. The worst Combo.

I have many personal feelings about it.  I am:

1. Tired of being tired, no energy
2.  Tired of being stared at as the big fat guy.
3.  Fighting Diabetes and the complications thereof
4.  Pain in back, knees, legs, feet.
5.  I have a wonderful wife and 4 beautiful daughers I am in NO way ready to leave.  I still have a lot to experience with them and I want to do it.
6.  Tired of feeling ashamed.  You know, a lot of the weight gain was due to some meds I was put on for my diabetes.  I weighed 250lbs.  I was put on avandia and within 2 months I had gained 50lbs and it has gone downhill (and up the scale) since.  I called the Dr exasperated and he said it was due to the meds.  He took me off them immediately.  That was over 4 years ago. It is all I can do to maintain at 365 now.

I got scared straight when my A1C test came in at 11.2 back in January.  Then I got an infection in my leg and had no idea.  I realized I cannot go on like this.  I am happy to announce my A1C this quarter was down to 6.3

I am now excited to do what I need to do.  I am getting up and exercising more than I was knowing I have this tool available to help me get back to being me.

Thanks so much for the start of this discussion.  Good luck and God bless

My mom has diabetes and has struggled with weight gain from the meds she has been put on and it's so hard because there's really nothing you can do even if you do eat and exercise perfectly.  It's horrible, so I definately sympathize with you on what you are going through with that.  I hope that you can get off all your meds in the very near future!

4 girls?  Wow!  I bet you have the most fun house on the block!

I had plenty of reasons!! I wanted to take control of my health while I was still young and relatively healthy.

1. Arthritic joints. Knees, hips, etc. Get off the pain meds!!! (or at least not have to take them as often)
2. Family history of the following: diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, high cholesterol, arthritis.
3. BE HEALTHY

Those were my reasons. The residual benefits include:
1. Cute clothes from wherever the hell I want to shop!
2. Feeling beautiful on the outside (as well as on the inside)
3. Dating....got a boyfriend, but the extra head-turns from other men is incredibly flattering
4. I am no longer the "fat" chick!!!!

Best damn decision I ever made. Wish I could have made it sooner!!!!

My reasons:
1. Had to have surgery anyway. I had gallstones and needed to have my gallbladder out. Got gallstones because of yo-yo dieting.
2. Strong family history of diabetes and lifelong obesity, hbp too. My mother ended up having WLS. My father should have WLS, but might not survive if he ever does cause of his diabetes being so bad.
3. I was sure if I didn't get WLS now I'd want it some day, and I'd rather spend most of my life thin than waste my life being fat till I had no other option.
4. I wanted to be thin before I got married and it's getting to be that time I'm approaching it. No plus size wedding dress for me!
5. I wanted food to stop controlling my life. I wanted to be in control for once.

 1. I didn't want to die too young, too soon
2. I see the struggles, pills and shots my mom takes to control her diabetes and there's no way I want that for myself.
3. To be able to be as physically fit as I always wanted to be.  I always exercised but to be able to run 2 miles in 20 minutes without stopping is unbelievable!
4.  I finally wanted to be the person on the outside that I felt I was on the inside.  I loved every aspect of my life except how I looked and felt.
5.  I was starting to have heart palpitations randomly and I'm pretty sure was associated with my weight.  It scared me to death...they haven't happened since.

These are my reasons....
1. To no longer let food be in control of my life.
2. To be healthier.
3. To feel more comfortable in my skin.
4. To be more mobile and active.
5. To be able to shop wherever I want.
6. Being diagnosed with Lupus I need to do everything I can to get my body working properly, and not put it through any more stress than it already is.
7. Pain in my legs, back, and feet.
