Letter of Support
Hey everyone!!! I finally finished all the pre-op steps and we submitted to my insurance company today. I'm excited and nervous at the same time. My nurse asked me if I had a Primary Care Physician letter of support and I told her no I don't have a PCP. She said it would be better to have one of these letters but submitted all my info anyway. Does anyone else have any experience with this "letter of support" issue?
I didn't have a "letter of support", per se, but I had to prove to my insurance that a: I had a PCP who worked with me and was staging "behavioral interventions" if I didn't comply with the pre-op diet, and also who would provide long term support in that she would consistently follow up with me.
Basically, I think that they just want to do all they can to keep Dr.'s overseeing you long term, to up the chances of success. Their bottom line is money, and if they spend $30k on a WLS and then you regain and they still spend all sorts of $$$ on obesity related issues again they didin't much meet their bottom line.
I do also recommend finding a PCP because it will be good for you, as you get your check-ups, physicals, etc, or if you encounter medically related issues over time, to have a person who knows you, knows your history, and understands that you have had WLS.
I don't think my PCP has any other WLS patients (ok, I'm technically not one for 13 more days) so I can tell she's actually learning a lot by working with me and my surgeon. That's probably a good thing!
