xpost - Best way to get your parents to stop freaking over surgery

Ok so my surgery is coming up on 9/9 and my parents, especially my mom, are sorta freaking out over it. My mom is freaking out over the surgery and the IVC filter I have to have put in a few weeks before surgery. What is the best way to get them to understand that the pros outweigh the cons on this surgery? I've tried everything I can think of and nothing seems to help. I need to help her stop stressing so I stop stressing over her stressing lol . Any help is appreciated!

As a mom, I don't think there is much you can do....parents are going to worry no matter what.  If it was my child having any sort of surgery, I'd be a basket case as well.

My mom really freaked out before my surgery also.  I just reassured her with all the positive information and just let her know that this was the best decision for me.  After you are out of sugery, they will calm down when they see you are ok.  Until then, just try to ride it out!

I'll agree with Emily's "ride it out" theory. They're your parents. And they're always going to worry. It's part of the job description, or so I hear.

Just try to stay calm. Explain thoroughly how you feel. Pros outweigh the cons. Surgery is scary, but I'm sure your parents will want you to live a long, healthy life. It might help to explain that their "freaking out" is not helping your stress level over the whole thing.

After surgery, the freaking out declines exponentially.

Good Luck!!

My parents were freaked at first but I shared everything with them and they felt beter about the decision as time went on. I had to do a 1/2 day group training with the surgeon so I invited my mom along. Although I have not lived with my parents for years I invited them to my dr. apointments. My mom is also a nurse so she had some good questions to ask. Talk to your parents about their concerns and if they have questions you can't answer ask the Dr. Well it worked for me. My mom even went with me to the hospital and took care of me post op. She poured my 15cc's of water and protein. Also their are message boards on this site for family members of WLS patients.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions and comments. I'm taking my mom with me to my pre-op appointment day and told her she could ask the surgeon anything she wants lol. This seem to make her feel a little better already. I'm just going to keep positive and hopefully that will help her too.
