Scheduling surgery around school

I am still going through my 3 month requirement visits for my insurance and I'm currently in my last month.  All my visits will be complete as of July 27.  However, school starts back on August 20th.  I don't think my surgery date would fall before that.  Did anyone have the issue of having to schedule their surgery around their school schedule?  I don't know how much recovery time I would need.  Any advice on this situation?

Thanks!

hmmm...what type of surgery r u lookin into? my friend got DS over winter break (jan 6) and still ended up missing a month of school!! idk how she did it. i think with my surgery (realize band) though a week would have been more than enough  time for me to return to school. maybe if u schedule it over a holiday weekend from school or something and miss a couple of days of class? i dunno tho. everyone is different...hope it works out for you though!

Either the VSG or RNY.  I haven't really made a solid decision on which one yet.  I need to check into situations like this and how the school handles them.  I don't want to have to take this semester off and winter break seems so far away. Eek, what's a girl to do...

The same thing happened to me last year. I finished everything in early August, but my surgeon HAD to have a vacation in August and my insurance company HAD to take their time processing everything. It sucked a little bit, but I had to wait until Christmas break to have my surgery. As far as recovery time - I really only needed a few days. The Lortab took care of the worst of it and I was off that within 4 or 5 days. I'd say if you can somehow get an early August date, go for it. Realistically though, unless your surgeon has a really open schedule and you have a great insurance company or you're selfpay, you might have to end up waiting like I did.

Hey, I just wanted to let you know that I completely understand! I had VSG 10 days ago and I started my summer school classes 6 days later. I was worried that I wasn't going to have the energy to go to class and I'd have to drop, but its been fine. I'm having no problems at all going to class and getting everything done. (and I'm in 7 hours for the summer which is pretty equivalent to a 15 hour semester) I would think that you'll be okay as long as you give your self a week if at all possible. I probably could've done it with 4 days, but the extra two were nice to get into the water drinking routine a little more.

I'd say give yourself a week to be safe... and I would recommend waiting until break because if things go wrong you wont shoot yourself in the foot. I almost didn't graduate because I had problems- I had my surgery over spring break, and then ended up in the hospital for a week and a half

I'd give yourself like 2 weeks. I had my RNY over Christmas break and took a week off before the semester started. While I was physically ok, I was experiencing extreme fatigue.

I go to an online college that is SUPER flexible around people's schedules.... I had no problem getting a course extension.

I would say that if you're physically attending classes though.... give yourself about 2 weeks. I had the band, and my recovery was pretty easy..... but I did have a hard time sitting up for long periods of time for the first couple weeks while my incisions were recovering.

Otherwise, maybe talk to your teachers and see if they'll work with you. Maybe you can work ahead before surgery so that you can take a little bit of time off.... or something like that. Most teachers (the ones I've encountered at least) are pretty understanding about stuff like that... especially if you provide documentation from the doctor. :)

Good luck!!!

I was worried about this issue also. I'm currently in summer classes (I'm taking 4 yes I am crazy!) and they end July 31st. Fall classes started around August 17th I think, so I was hoping to have my surgery at the beginning of August to give me some time to recover before classes start back. I don't know if this is going to happen or not since I'm still waiting for the pre-op nurse to call me with my surgery date and the date for the rest of my pre-op stuff (ekg, chest x-ray, labs, IVC filter). She's "supposed" to call me this week. I got my approval letter on June 13th and since then it's all been one big waiting game! Luckily for my I managed to get all online classes for fall, but I'd still like some recovery time so I'm not worried bout anything but school when it starts since I'm taking 6 classes (yes I'm still crazy lol). My advice would be if you can take classes online do it! Or if you can somehow schedule in the 2 day a week classes that way if you're fatigued in the beginning it won't be as hard to make it to class.

when i had my surgery, i finished up all my pre-appointments in august, but had to still go for pre-surgery testing blah blah blah after since my surgeon was pretty booked.  i ended up having my jan. 8/08 and that was in my opinion the best time.  While i healed reallyy well with minimal pain, i had a full two weeks to recover which was great.  and the start of the semester is always easiest, so getting back to class was nice, i eased into my new life as i eased into my classes.  while i know waiting it out will stink, in my opinion it, will be worth it!!! good luck, let us know how it goes!!
