so like i've said before, im 19 months out...and this is something i do need to talk over with my doctor, but I want to go on birth control.... i was never on it before and i'm thinking now is a good time to start ha.  What birth control is recommended for us? Can we take pills? or is there a problem with malabsortion? so many options, and i know the different kinds are all personal choices, but i was just wondering what kinds you girls are on or if we can take pills.

thanks :)

Some doctor's say that hormones are okay and some say no. many say that their are problems with the pill and malabsorbtion. The problem is that different people and different doctors say different things so I will stay on the safe side and not use that method. Plus hormonal birth control can cause weight gain. It did for me in the past so I will not do any hormonal things. But if you are into theat you can do the nuva ring wich stays high up in the vagina and is changed monthly. You have to check it frequently to make sure it is still there. You could also do the patch or implant that go in the arm just under the skin and stay there for up to I think 3 years. They have to be surgically removed but you don't have to think about it for years. Plus you have lighter or no periods. You could also do a IUD which has no hormones and is put into place by the OB-GYN. It is inserted into the vagina and irritates the lining of the uterus so an egg won't implant. It can stay in for 10 years I think and is easily removed by the doctor. There is no weight gain with this one. : ) I choose condoms because I do not like to take a shower every time I have sex. Condoms keep his fluids to himself and away from me. I like the brand Beyond 7 they feel like he has nothing on. Plus he lasts a little longer. There are other options but those are the most common. Be really careful using hormones and monitor your weight closely. Enjoy the great sex! Worse comes to worse you are far enough out that a baby won't be a health risk.

I'm fairly sure you have to wait 30 days post op to do any hormones. I like them cuz *** is nasty and it skeeves me out. You probably did not leave space at the end of the condom or you used old ones or they were stored in the heat. That sucks.

I've used about every form of BC there is......man, that makes me sound like a hussy....I'm not!  I swear!  I had problems with the differing levels of hormones in things like Ortho Tri-Cycline causing depression, so I had to use several different pills, rings, patches, shots, etc.  until I found something that worked and made me not have breakdowns in the middle of the grocery store parking lot.....true story, unfortunately.

Right now  I use Mirena IUD and love it but it's not for everyone so look into it carefully if you choose to go that route (sounds eerily like what I've said about researching WLS, lol).    I never had a problem with Mirena and I like not having to remember to take another pill everyday.  Pre-WLS, I used Nuva Ring and really liked that also.

Good luck!  It can be hard with so many options out there but do take the time to really find something that works for you, it will make life tons easier!

If I could be on a commercial for Nuva Ring I would. I have used it for 7 years and would only trade it for a tubal ligation. Since I might want to have another I stick with the ring. No absorption problems and you only have to think of it once a month. That is less then your vitamins! you can try one for a month for free from your GYN or get a free coupon from the website.

I also agree with previous poster who said that they use condoms. I use those as well because you cant be to safe!

I also use the Mirena IUD as well, and I have never had children either. Im happy with it so far. I had some bad cramping the first week or two, but that stopped.

If you want to get somewhere you have to know where you want to go and how to get there. Then never, never, never, give up!

I use the nuva ring. It's great! I'm off it now cause i'm so close to surgery and they don't like you taking hormones.... so it'll be a bummer for a couple months. I've used it for 3 or more years now and it's great because I only have to worry about once a month. You put it in and leave it in for 3 weeks then take it out, wait a week when you have your period (VERY predictable and awesome like that) then you put a new ring in and wait three weeks.. etc.
It won't mal-absorb after surgery which is great. You really can't feel it at all, and my man has never minded it at all.. don't think he can feel it either.. No need to remove it for any reason until the three weks are up, and you can use tampons at the same time if you want to. That's the only time I ever worry if it's come out, but it still never has. It just stays put!... so long as it's in there right which is easy to tell. What I also love is that it's really low hormone compared to all the pills. It delivers hormones more directly so tey don't need to use as much.I've never had problems gaining weight on it when I was dieting. I was able to diet successfully while on it and I attribute all my weight gain on it or otherwise to myself. I might switch to an IUD someday... except I really like how I always know exactly when my period will come and an IUD wouldn't let me keep track as well. And even though they last a long time I heard they can hurt a lot when they're put in...
Anyway, that's my suggestion. Nuva ring has worked great for me :) Good luck!

I use the Mirena IUD. I was on the pill, but switched to the IUD before I had surgery. No complaints.

I have a mierena IUD and LOVE IT!! I have had it for about 3 yrs now and no complaints at all. It sucked having it put in lots of cramping b/c I have never had children, but well worth it.
