Feeling really nervous!

This is my first time posting and I was happy to find a form about WLS in your 20s (I'm 20, but will be 21 when I get my surgery).

I was originally going to have the Lap-Band, but after my appointment with the surgeon (which took nine months of appointments), I have changed my mind and decided on Roux-en-y. I am SO nervous about the possible complications. I'm terrified of dumping syndrome. During the group meeting at my hospital they described it as '30 minutes of pure hell'. I am also really nervous about waking up from surgery in so much pain. I guess I'm just scared of the whole thing and was hoping to hear from some people who have gone through this at my age. What did it feel like after the operation, when did you feel 'back to normal', and what is it like eating in such a different way?

I have 10 month old baby at home and I'm also a full time student, I'm concerned that I will have problems keeping up with everything during recovery, any mom's have experience with that?

My next step is to send everything to insurance and I have to get an EGD.

Any advice/words of wisdom are appreciated.

hey gir don´t be nervious is gonna be awesome all the people here is so happy with their surgerys and u wil be also.
i had the RNY 17 months ago when i was 22 and i couln´d be happy i`m so glad i didn´t had the band. i know this was the best choise for me. about the dumping is not that bad. haha don´t be scared. i don´t always dump. and i wish i `d do it more often it helps u to be away of the wrong kinda food. i see it like a good thing like an importatn part of the tool. but there is a chance u don´t dump so don`´t worry about that.
i walked 4 hours right after surgery, yes it sucks but is not  terrible pain u are gonna be able to handle it and you would do it over and over again so don´t worry about the pain.
i felt like myself again 2 months out. if blog on my page if u wanna lake a look u are very wellcome
good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
keep us posted
hugs.

Thanks so much Mariana,

I suppose dumping would be a good motivator to stay away from bad food, I never thought of it that way before. I checked out your blog and your results are amazing, you look great!

Thanks for your support!

RNY on 02/12/09 with
being nervous is purely normal hun! we'd be worried if you weren't!
glad you decided to post up, you really can never have TOO much support in this journey...
waking up after surgery was a little difficult for me BUT that was because the recovery room nurse was a grumpy old woman who ACTUALLy leaned over my bed and told me that if i didn't be quiet she would give me my morphine!!! thankfully i did get my medicine and the pain was no where near what i had expected! much less =)
I'm glad they tell everyone how horrible dumping is because it really is a deterrent for those who have issues with sweets!! keep in mind however that sweets aren't the only things that can cause you to dump. high fatty foods, fried foods in excess and even things like lettuce for some (its naturally hard to digest)
rest assured that it will definitely be worth it hun!!!
you are doing the best thing you can possibly do for you and your child!!
take care and again don't hesitate to ask anything.

That nurse sounds horrible, I can't believe they would let someone so mean work there! I'm glad to hear that the pain for you was manageable, I'm sure the medication helps. Thank you so much for your support!

Everyone's different and some of us don't dump at all. I don't dump on anything in the pure sense of dumping but some things make me feel a bit tired. Don't let a fear of dumping stop you, I actually wish I dumped, I might eat less crap if I did

I had the same fears about going back to 'normal' and the answer is yes, you totally will feel completely normal again. It takes a little while to adjust but after that everything is basically the same as before only you have to watch your portions, food choices, water, vitamins, and exercise.

As for taking care of a baby during recovery, honestly that's a tough one. I was basically useless for about a week post-op, just so sore, weak and tired, and I felt like crap for another 2-3 weeks after that (not pain just mostly tired). And you really shouldn't be lifting for about 8 weeks. So hopefully you've got some good support on that front.

Best of luck with everything, you'll be just fine!

I am so glad to hear that things can return to 'normal'. I have always worried about that. I don't know how I am going to handle taking care of my daughter during recovery. 8 weeks seems like a long time to not be able to lift her. I know its worth it in the end because she will have a more active mom, but I guess I will have to set up daycare or something.
Thank You!
