I think I remember reading on here that you are suppost to wait a couple of months after surgery before you start tanning because it can actually make the scar MORE noticeable. Also, mederma (over the counter scar healing cream) would probably help too! (that stuff is awesome!)

Any time you have a new scar (like from surgery) you are not supposed to expose it to the sun for like 6 months because it causes the scar to stay darker than it normally would be. Once that time frame is up then yes it does help to hide it to some degree; however, for strech marks I've heard fake tanners work better to hide them than exposing them to the sun. I have not tried this out so I dont know if it is true or not. good luck

Once scars have faded to their final whitish/greyish color, tanning only makes them stand out more because scars do NOT tan!! Self tanners are really the only way to go if cover up to any degree is what u r looking for.

FIRST OFF I HAVEN'T HAD MY SURGERY YET BUT I DO HAVE A SCAR ON MY HIP AND I GO TANNING AT A SALON AND IT DOES HELP. SECONDLY I ALSO HAVE A COUPLE OF STRETCH MARKS ON MY HIPS AND MY TUMMY AND IT DOES FADE THEM. MINE ARE HARDLY NOTICABLE.  AND ALSO...I TRIED USING MADERMA AND IT SUCKED BUT YOU HAVE TO REMEMBER NO MATTER WHO YOU TAKE ADVICE FROM OUR SKIN WORKS DIFFERENTLY AND SO WHAT ONES SKIN DOES YOURS MAY NOT. TANNING IN THE SALON IS SO RELAXING AND IF YOU HAVE HEALED ENOUGH I WOULDN'T SEE WHY YOU SHOULDN'T DO. EVERYONE HAS A DIFFERENT OPINION.  TANNING MIGHT JUST MAKE YOU FEEL BETTER IF ALL ELSE.  I PLAN ON CONTINUING TO GO AFTER I HEAL FROM MY SURGERY....SO ANYWAYS GOOD LUCK

I was tanning before surgery and didn't want to lose my tan, and asked the dr about timing on when I could return.  I had my surgery on May 21 and started tanning about a week ago.

They did tell me to cover my scars with a band-aid though.

Good Luck :)
