PsyCh Eval Folks?
So tomorrow is my psych eval which a lot of you know depending on insurance companies and or bariatric programs is required. Do you mind sharing what types of questions were asked? Im very nervous I just want to know what im kind of getting into you know? I will make the psych fully aware this is meant for my health and of course to better myself and my life for my daughter... By no means am I doing this to be vain or being all about self image.. (Although it is a perk... hehe) Any ideas? Anyone NOT get the OK from the psych and if so (if you dont mind saying) why not? Thanks Guys!! My journey is almost done!!! I meet with my surgeon 7/2 woot woot!

I had a really easy psych eval but I'm not sure it was typical... Some of the questions I remember him asking were something like...
Is there anything very stressful in your life right now?
Do you have someone supportive of your surgery in your life?
Why do you want to have surgery?
What do you expect to come from having the surgery?
Do you eat beyond when you feel fullness?
Do you know what's involved with the surgery?
How do you expect your life to change afterward?
Do you know the complication risks?
He was impressed by how informed I was about wls... I've read a few books... and I think he was really happy about how much support I had around me. OH, Support groups, books, my mom... etc.
He was the same guy that did my mom's psych eval so he also asked me how she was doing and I showed him a few pics of her 100 lbs less than he'd last seen her :)
It lasted about 45 mins or so and put me out $185 of my own cash... cause I didn't feel like trying to find a psych who knew about the WLS evaluation who took my insurance...mom didn't find one.... but it was nice to just get it over with.

My surgeon allowed me to have my psych eval done by LCSW, or therapist that i have been working with for about 3 years. The surgeons office gave a sheet for her to work off of, and thats about it. She knows everything about me and my family and everything in between. So she was able to answer all the questions on the (ex. Psych Eval Letter they provided) so she typed it all up and we read it over together, and i was statisfied. Thats what my surgeons office/insurance accepted as an psych eval, from my Therapist. It didnt have to be from a PHD, or MD.
If you want to get somewhere you have to know where you want to go and how to get there. Then never, never, never, give up!

I had my psych eval yesterday. I "passed" but only on the condition that I continue to see the psychologist every month until I have the surgery and then possibly for a couple months following the surgery. It sucks... she said it isn't going to look negative or effect my insurance approval but I'm still leary that it will.
The reason I have to continue seeing the psychologist is because I was "diagnosed" with depression about 3 years ago and even though I don't really feel like I'm depressed, she thinks I am. Whatever- I think depression and low self-confidence from being overweight kind-of mimic each other. So yeah... she asked a lot of questions about my support systems and past history of depression, family history of depression or mental health problems, etc. She said they look for 2 things in the eval- 1. that you understand the necessary changes you need to make in your life to be successful with the surgery and how likely you are to comply and 2. if you are under a lot of stress/depression and how you deal with stress, who you have for support, etc.
I think another reason that I was "passed with condition" was because I haven't really told my family about the surgery. It's a long story but it was a personal decision and some people can't understand that not everyone is super close with their family.
Ah well. Guess this means I'm crazy.

I loved my psych eval...i told her upfront that i was dramatic and wanted to know if i was crazy...
she asked about my background history....I even told her about the child abuse....but I told her that was the past and now everything has been good since high school...there even planning my wedding....
She asked about the weight load of my life....I have 3 non-bilogical children, full time secretary...full time student....full time rny program student...lmao...
then she had me take a series of test...anyways one of the test was asking the same question in different forms......anyways this test repeats questions to find out your personality....so therefore....once i got the results...it informed me that i was indeed dramatic...but very determined....and sometimes stubborned....
SO I GUESSED I PASSED!!!!! LMAO!!!!!
