RNY vs Lap-Band

Seems like everyone on here has gotten RNY and not the LapBand surgery. I was wondering what everyones reasons were for getting RNY instead of lapband.

Are there any people here who have gotten/are getting the lap band surgery. I would love to connect and share experiences and fears and what not!

If you have done the lap band, has it worked for you? Do you like it? Do you hate it? Do you feel constricted? How hard is it to say no to those cookies and cakes and burgers etc. lol

I had the VSg. It seems to have the least complications. I am a week out and have no probems at all.

RNY on 02/12/09 with
there are actually a few banders on here and they seem to have done very well, i hope they'll chime in for ya soon!!
I actually was considering the band when i first started looking into WLS, it was certainly what my boyfriend and his family preferred for me (they were just worried) BUT my fam was all for the RNY lol
I spent many many hours a day doing research and i think i changed my mind about the surgery type EVERY SINGLE DAY lol, finally i decided to stop killing myself trying to figure it out and waited until my consultation, turns out the surgeon wasnt that much help either in the beginning (lol) because he said he thought i would do great on either...
BUT then he came back in the room after leaving me to visit with his nurse and said "oh i saw that you have PCOS (polycystic ovarion syndrome)" and told me that he still believed that i would do good with either but because ladies with pcos were predisposed(sp) to lose weight very slowly that RNY would give me results in 1/2 the time. He expects me to reach goal in less than a yr and with the band he expected me to reach goal in just under 2.
That kind of sealed the deal for me. Later found out that the band was excluded from my companies insurance coverage...so it looks like i made the right choice for me!

Well my decision was pretty easily made. I wanted the VSG first but my insurance will only cover RNY or the band and were pretty strapped for cash so out of pocket was a no go. This left my choices to the two you are questioning. The reasons I didn't choose the lap band are because 1) I have a fear of needles so I would spaz out at every fill I am sure 2) weight loss is slower with the band...I get ansty if I do not see results when I want them and 3) I would probably find a way to eat around the band. I am not addicted to sweets or fat or anything, my portion sizes are just crazy large but I did not want to have to worry about what if I decided to drown my sorrows in Carvel or Ben & Jerrys or what I would do with myself around Thanksgiving, Christmas, birthdays, or any other day for that matter.

Hope this helps!

So... what DO you do around holidays centered around food? What are typical meals like for RNYers vs LapBanders?

Well I dont know about everyone else but Sundays in my family are like constant holidays. We are a family that strives on food...they always have to do it big with lots of carbs, fried everything, and buckets of greese. So my first week postop was hell has I watched the foods I have loved all my life be scarfed down while I sipped my protein shake.

However, now I realize it is not so bad. My family knows what I have done and because of that they have been making a conscious effort not to make me feel left out. They've been cooking better, which is good for me and them (most of my family is overweight). And also, I am almost a month out and have realized that I can nibble at almost anything (there are certain things that common sense just says no to...deep fried anything) and feel fine. Some say beware of grilled and bbq sauce cause its easy to make you dump. Well yesturday was Memorial Day and I have grilled bbq chicken...two drumettes and I was fine. Today my sister made sweet and spicy teryaki chicken breast with string beans mixed in and a side of rice, I made my own garlic and cheese mashed potatoes instead (ate like one bite after I had my chicken) of rice and had mostly the chicken and string beans. Some say the breast of chicken is dry and cause problems...went down good with me. Also I was terrified of dumping because the sauce bottle says 2 tbsp has 9 g of sugar and then my sister ADDED a tbsp of table sugar....I was sure I was going to die of dumping syndrome cause I am sure that was over 12 g of sugar in what I ate. Went down fine, no problems and its an hour and a half later (and I am pretty sure I am clear of the dump zone). So really I have not had any trouble in terms of holidays or anything (and shhhh but my mom made a carrot cake...she used less sugar in this and they naughtily urged me into this, I know bad them.....and I had a bite, no problems two days later. It satisfied my crazy sweet tooth I was having and couldn't get rid of but surprisingly didn't make me sick but I know shame on me. But like most say, I did this to change my relationship with food to healthy and in moderation not to be a crazy lunatic dieter for the rest of my life who doesn't enjoy food...key is MODERATION and thats important no matter what you chose.

And as for the lap. I am not sure what their meal plans are but I am pretty sure they are similar to a RNYer. The only difference is they don't have dumping syndrome so if you are not strong willed, you might fall into bad sweet habits.

I am a RNY'er.  At first I thought I was swinging Lap Band because it seems less invasive, and then I realized that the RNY has a lot more data about post ops 30-40 years out.  I also figured if I was going to do this, I wanted to change my life, not a maybe.  I knew I could get around the band, there's no getting around my RNY.  Best decision I made in my life.  Plus my insurance covered my RNY over my band, it was an easy decision.

Good luck on your journey.

hi girl.
i got the RNY `cuz I wantend a gastric bypass and everyone i knew had the rny with great results. I didin´t ate to much food 2 weight what i used to weight so i thougth that i needed restriction and malabsorsion for the calorie thing. you know.  and i didn´t like the idea to have some plastic inside my body lol crazy thougth
you have 2 understand also tha everyone here is inl ove with their own surgery so you have to be very careful about the information you get trough this forums. tallk to your surgeron about your options and what you thing is the best for you and what he thinks it would be the best surgery option for you.  you have 2 be very careful with this too.  you have to be 100% sure about your surgery option. i have a friend you wanted the rny and his dr. made her choose the lap band and she is really opset about her surgery and she is blaming her surgeron for making a bad decision for her. when she was the responsable of getting it.
i also know 2 banders that are doing great job. and also a couple who are not. but i also know a few rny`ers that gain a lot of weight back. so i think is not about the surgery choise is about how you work your tool it doesn´t matter if is a band or a gastric by pass. you have the power over the surgery.
also you maight wanna reserch the VSG. or the DS. it sounds very intesring.
hugs.

This can be a very  hot topic.

From what I've gathered when this subject has been brooched before (and what I think) is that there is no "right or wrong" choice.  It's up to the person getting the surgery.  I got the RNY because I knew that would be best for me being a restriciton and malabsorption procedure.  Some people don't like the fact that you will have your insides rearranged, so they opt for the band.  Who knows, the band may have worked very well for me...I don't know....It's a hard choice but no one can make it for you.

I don't believe my surgery has compromised my life in any way and I'm lucky for that because any surgery can cause complications.  Sometimes we tend to hear horror stories but such it is with anything.  Like a previous poster said, there are people on here who've had RNY, band and VSG and have done exceptionally well.

Good luck!

~Emily~

Hi, I had the realize band ( basically the same thing as a lap band) done march 20th. So far I love my band. i chose it because I wasnt really liking the idea of a doctor cutting up my intestines and moving things around. I know it works for most people but it just wasnt for me. With the band you go for your fills to help give you restirction. So far I have 6cc's in a 9cc band. I have pretty good restriction and the weight is coming off so I'm happy. Pre op I lost 34lbs and post op I've lost 29lbs. I love my band so far and hope to continue to feel that way. If you have questions plz feel free to ask.
