Questions for anesthesiologist...

Hello Everyone!

Haven't posted much in a while, but I've been lurking. I hope you're all doing well :) For those of you that have been posting pictures lately, you're all looking faaaabulous!

My surgery is one week from today (omg!) and I have my PreOp appointment at the hospital later today. I should have posted this earlier, but I forgot! I am meeting with the anesthesiologist today and I am wondering if there is anything specific I should be asking him. I have a few concerns that I'm going to address with him because I had a tough time when I woke up from my sinus surgery 2 years ago so I want to run that by him. I'm just wondering if any of you had anything that was specific to the anesthesiologist or the hospital staff (nurses)? The next time I'll see these people will be the day of surgery so if there's anything you can think of that you asked (or wish you had asked), please let me know. My appointment is at 12:30 today...

Thanks!

~H

I would just discuss that sinus surgery thing with him and to make sure you go through every medication you're taking and to ask him individually on each medication if it is going to cause problems. I would also diplomatically ask him what exactly his qualifications are and how he would handle an emergency situation if it came up and how many times he's dealt with a situation like that. Oh, and I'd ask how many times he's dealt with obese people, since it's a riskier deal.

I have huge problems with morphine, so I have to ask not to be put on that.  Yes, discuss your previous surgery and how you felt and what you would like done differently, if possible.  They will make a note of it in your chart and hopefully you will feel better after this surgery than the last.

Asking if he has worked with obese people is a good question that the previous poster mentioned.

I would see if there will be a nurse anethetist there also and make sure they know what your needs are.  Usually it goes the anethesiologist will administer the drugs and the nurse anethetist will be the one monitoring you through out the process......

Good luck!!

I personally would NOT ask about emergency situations. I promise you, those crews are trained for those types of situations and they've dealt with more of them then you want to know about...why open yourself up to needless worry.

If the difficulty you had when you woke up last time had to do with being sick to your stomach, ask if there's any way you can have a Scopolamine patch. It's a tiny little patch that goes behind your ear and does wonders for a sick tummy.

If it's a nurse anesthetist who is going to be working with you, they are under the supervision of an anesthesiologist, but they work autonomously, meaning on their own. They do their own drugs and their own monitoring and handle their own emergencies...and they are fully qualified to do such. I had a nurse anesthetist for my surgery and not only was he really good looking *swoon* but he was extremely nice and very capable. Be not afraid!!

Also, your meeting is probably going to be with a nurse who works with anesthesia, I highly doubt that you'll meet with an actual doctor. But those nurses are really good at what they do and they can answer all your questions just as well as the doc's can. And if they don't know something, they'll track a doc down and get the answer from him (or her).

Good luck!!

The meeting went well and I think I asked all the necessary questions.

Thanks everyone!
