RNY or Lap Band???

Hello OH members, I am undecided on whether to have the Lap Band procedure or the RNY.  I have been reading alot by both procedures and on people who initially chose the Lap Band procedure, but later had the RNY because there were complications with the Lap Band.  My Mom recently had the Lap Band procedure about 2months ago and my aunt the same procedure about 1.5 years ago. My aunt is back at her college weight and is looking very well if I may add.  My Mom has lost alot of weight from what I can see because I told her that she needs to go shopping for a new wardrobe because her slacks are starting to look like MC Hammer pants, lol.  She just laughs and say I have no idea what size I wear now.

Are there anyone out there that has had the RNY and wish they haven't or the Lap Band?

Thanks
Brittnie S.

I love my realize band (same thing as the lap band). I've only had it for just under a month but its working so far and I've had no complications. This is a really personal decision. The reason I chose the lapband was because I wasn't comfortable with someone rearranging my organs or the semi-malabsorption that comes with that procedure. I'm only 21 and the lap band seemed like a good choice because I can control my restriction with fill along with getting it unfilled if needed when I start having kids. talk to your surgeon about which one he feels is best for you. Good luck.

Hi Brittnie, I too thought about having the choice of unfilling and adjusting my band when I decide to have children being that I am only 22, plus seeing the end results of my Mom and Aunt, but there is still a little thought in my mind about RNY.  When I went for my initial consultation(Feb. 5th, 2009) the nurse told me that RNY would probably be best for me being that I work overseas and would not need as many office visits as I would with the band.  The office location that I visited is in Convington, LA and before I came overseas I was living in Biloxi, MS which is about an hour or so from the doctor that I had chosen for my procedure.  I guess I would need to consult with my doctor again and weigh my options out. Thanks and good luck to you as well.

Hello. I actually had the RNY, but I will say it's up to your discretion. If you know that you will be going back to your old eating habits then it will be wise to do the lap band because you can have the same food but just smaller portions, but at the same time you really won't see much progress eating the same way you do now(just saying that because we all have a problem). It's hard taking new vitamins, but the reward is greater. Good luck with making your decision, and let me know if you have any questions.

Hi Paris and thanks for replying to my post.  I know that with any procedure I will have to change my eating habits and I am so, so, so ready for that.  I honestly do not eat alot when I eat, I think it is more so what I eat.  I am not a big snacker and eat 3 times a day, breakfast around 6, lunch about 11:30 am and dinner around 7.  I started considering the RNY due to me working overseas and not having to go back to the doctor for fills as much. My Mom actually found a doctor over here(Kuwait) to do her fills for the lap band because she got hers done in Dubain on January 21, 2009 and I am starting to see a change in the weigh she looks, but to me she is not going the extra mile like she needs to.  I have gotten on her about eating her fod too quick and trying to eat the same foods like she was before the surgery and being that she is the Mom she does what she wants to do.

The doctor that does her fills price is only $6,000 for the lap band.  I have not had a chance to go and talk to him on my own to try and weigh out my options.  I have still been keeping in contact with the doctor that I went to for consultation before I left the states and they are trying to see if my insurance will accept the procedure or not, the first time they did not due to lack of information from the doctor.  Thanks for your advice and I am sure I will have plenty of questions.

I had rny. when I was deciding what I wanted. I orginally wanted the lap band, b/c one day I want children and liked that it was adjustable. I have a friend who had lap band she lost a lot of weight, but she cant get filled b/c her fills make her really sick. Plus I wanted something that could give me what I wanted. It has really help me to change how I eat. I was afraid Ided be able to eat around the band so thats not what i wanted. Also my surgen is in Houston and I live in beaumont, which is about an hr and half to two hr drive. I also don't like needels. So with the chose of Rny I don't have to go back to houston as often as I would have with the band. I am happy with my chose. I am now healther and happier than i have ever been. The chose is ultmently up to u. Will you be able to stick to the plan and eat right with the band or do you think you will be one of the few to eat around the band so you need something that gives you more controll. Also you say you work over seas so will you be able to go back as nessary to get the fills. i wish you the best of luck with your descion any qustions just ask me.

Hello and thanks for replying to my post....My Hubby and I want children one day as well, but as of now we are still allergic to them, lol.  I know it will be five years or better before we decide to have them though.  My biggest fear with lap band is having the band to slip when I start losing weight and the thought of making it slip some other way because I play rough.  I do not want to be paranoid about doing certain things and enjoying life because of my band.  The thought of getting stuck with needles does not scare me or anything, I have a very high tolerance for pain.  I have 8 tats and want more, so getting the fills would not be a problem.  I am a little scared about getting them though because my Mom could not hardly drink water right when she got her first one, I understand that everyone experience is different, but just the thought of not being able to drink water scares me. The reason I started to consider RNY was the thought of not having to go to the doctor as much and the whole slippage process.  There is a doctor over here that does bariatric surgery and Elizabeth whose also on the forum went to him for her procedure and her Mom even came over here so that he could do hers and my Mom goes to him to get her fills, so the doctor part is taken care of.  I will be sure to ask questions if in doubt or just need an understanding.  Thanks again for replying.

hi...its a tough decsion which surgery is right for you. I chose the lapband because as Britney said, having your insides rearaanged did not appeal lol. I guess it comes down to you at the end of the day. For me the lapband, is a steep learning curve and it takes a lot of gettjng use too. The lapband makes progress much slower, but you will get there in the end...apparently lol Its hard going and if youre impaient (like me) you might not like it. I think the others articulated better responses than me, but  I hope you make a choice which is right for you...good luck on your jounrney and keep us posted!!!

As everyone else said I believe WLS is  really a personal decision. I think that the best surgery  out of rny and lapband is the one that would work exclusively for you and your lifestyle. Most people are happy with their surgery when it suits their needs.  Don't get a surgery because you know people whom had the surgery. Find the one that will suit your needs, make sure the surgery you choose is something you can live with and make sure the proper upkeep of your tool fits comfortably in your schedule. Because what works for others may not work for you and what works for you may not work for others. Good Luck in your WLS  journey.
