hey guys i need help and am hoping someone can tell me what to do!
i have lost 7 lbs in the year since i started this process. when i went to my pre-surgical skills meetings they weighed us every time. when i got weighed the second week i was 1.5 heavier. i blamed it on bloating. it was my "broken" time of month. well the week after at my last meeting/class i had lost 2lbs. so thats a total of .5 down (yeah i know woo flippin hoo right?) heres my problem, in order for me to be really approved for the surgery i gotta try to at least drop 5 lbs by march 18th at my last behavioral appt. i have been eating well, i dont have time to exercise but ive been trying to do things like take the stairs more at work instead of the elevator, cutting carbs, i cut off my affair that i was having with starbucks caramel macchiatos. i havent lost a lb, in fact i have gained .2  heres my confession, im a smoker, they told me they wouldnt do the surgery if i smoked so ive been working my butt of to quit. not so easy, i tried chantix, yeah i felt like one more night on that would land me in the looney bin, i cant do the gum or lozenge because i have braces and had jaw surgery in oct, and so i finally tried the patch, wouldnt you know im allergic to the adhesive. what the crap? so ive been trying to quit smoking, which is making me feel like quite the hungry hungry hippo.

am i a lost cause?

HELP!

Sounds like your having quite a hard time with quiting smoking and losing weight.... not that I'm trying to state the obious but it will get easier. Here are a few things I can recommend
   1. Keep trying to quit smoking someone told me try lolli-pops the hand mouth combo keeps you
       busy.
   2. You say you don't have time to exercise but exercising is a HUGE part of weight loss (before
and AFTER surgery).... So try getting up early even if you love to sleep in you will thank yourself
       later.
  3. When you walk, walk faster move your arms (you might look funny but you will burn calories)
  4. Keep a food journal of EVERYTHING you eat and drink... avoiding all drinks exep****er because
everything else has calories and the key to losing weight is to consume less calories than you
       burn.
  5. Another thing to do is try doing a liquid diet (I'm doing one for 2 weeks before surgery which is
      required by my doctor.)
  6. Or try pre-packaged meals of less than 300 calories (per serving size) and then wait 20 min
after you finish to see if your still hungry and if so try eating protien or veggies.

                       Good luck

well, obviously i aint no expert on weight loss advise....or else i wouldnt have been here...but i found that when i was dieting the best thing for me was keeping track of my calories.....I know you can set up a free membership with everyday health's website...and you just log your food in ...and you can find out how much you need to be eating in order to lose the weight your required to lose...its gonna take alot of brain and will power!!! But you can do it....its the key to getting your tool!!!!! Other than that...i hope you do your best!!!!

ok girl  we have to be honest about how we are trying to lose the weight.
are you really trying?  that means you eat the right  things and excersice
I know it is really hard. I`m talking here about my experience. I`m one of those people who diet really hard all week and i eat what ever i want all weekend. and that`s a  thing to do to mantain weight. so we have to be constant. and try really hard.
if you don´t exercise íts gonna be soooo hard to lose the weight. remember that we are not only fat `cuz we eat a lot so we have to try harder than other people to lose the weight.
If you do all this right and don´t lose weight ( that i wish is not the case) talk to your dr. and some advice.
a food diary can help you to track your food intake and if you are doing right
good luck!
hang in there

thanks for the advice! i was sitting here reading this and was all "yeah i totally try to eat right" then noticing im munching on an entire bowl of dry cheerios left over from my sons dinner. thats my problem, i wont sit down and eat an entire cake or a 17oz steak. i eat primarily healthy foods, lots of baked fish, steamed veggies, little carbs. i wont lie and say i dont cheat. my husband came home with taco bell on his way home because he was in charge of dinner and said he'd pick something up. so of course i ate it. im not the best by any means. and i totally think a food diary would help me out! i did that a long long time ago and havent thought of it since. thats such a fantastic idea! thanks!!!
i also want to rephrase, its not that i dont have time to exercise, its that i dont know how to fit an exercise regimen into my busy schedule. i am slightly active (not applaud worthy but i move) i get up at 5am, get my son and husband up and ready, i leave the house by 6am only to sit on a train for 2 hours to get to work. but i walk a few blocks from the train to the office (briskly, not necessarily on urpose but by that time im usually frozen or have to pee) and i work a desk job but i walk around a lot. then i do the same few blocks back to the train after work and get home around 7, literally run around after my toddler (he's in a phase right now where he runs and wants to be chased) and get him ready for bed, my husband and i finally eat around 9 and then bed. once the weather gets nicer i plan on taking my  son to the park behind my house every saturday, but any suggestions on how to get proper exercise into a busy day?
again, i really appreciate all the advice, as a newbie to the board youve all been super nice!

yeah i know is defindly hard to find time to work out. even me that i`m single and have a full time job i can´t exercise `til 9.00 pm. do on weekends or even 15 minutes per day. their is exersice videos especialy made 4 people who dobn´t have the time that last aroun 15 min. you can go to a store and check them out. maybe there is something you might like. you don´t have to go to the gym i started with a bonch of dvds. or even in youtube!
good luck.
and about the food diary i just restarted mine lol.
good luck and keep me posted

i just noticed that you eat at 9pm at night., which is quite late at night eh. I know when I got home late night and I had my dinner, it would take me forever to get to sleep and I would wake up feeling bloated and yuck. I had to train myself to stop it and it was hard but i got there somehow in the end lol.  So my suggestion to you is to try and eat your dinner earlier in the day. You have to become organised and vigilant with your food...ie make bulk meals on the weekend and portion them out so you can grab them from the freezer when youre on the go go go!

I love your line about the affair...lmaoo mines been ongoing ever since they opened in new zealand, well not anymore thanks to surgery :-D

I hope you grab a hold of your smoking, its imperative you stop for your surgery otherwise you can die on the table and we dont want that do we....

keep your head up and be postivte because thats really half the battle...

keep us updated and good luck

you might also want to incorporate some weights into your workout routine...its good you take the stairs. try upping the ante take two stairs at a time instead of one...dont hold the rail as you climb the stairs, walk in the middle. in your lunch break try running up the stairs non stop then walking then run back up try doing that 3 times each and as you get fitter increase it - this is interval training is is really good for blasting fat.

maybe when you're home you can start lifting cans - any cans such as tinned fruit, beans or even water bottles...you'll start noticing tone in your arms etc..try doing situps and pushups. or you could just buy an excercise band (i think thats what tehy're called) you buy them at sports stores. or you could get a copy of buns of steel...lol

also have you thought of starting a walking group at your work? that might help and you would get the extra support from your collueges

well i hope ive helped ... sorry for posting twice :-D
good luck on your jounrey
