Protein Shakes

So what are some good post-RNY protein shakes? I guess I need to start ordering some to get them in the fridge before the 24th.

I did some quick looking on Amazon.com and there are a lot of different protein shakes. Some seem to have too much sugar, some too little protein, some have ok protein but lots of other vitamines...

So what did you all drink after surgery?

The first two months after surgery I used Unjury protein powder (found on www.unjury.com).   It was highly recommended by my surgeron.   Now I buy EAS protein powder at Sam's (you can get it at other places too).   I prefer the chocolate protein powders.

Even being 10 months out, I am still trying new protein powders (I am hoping to try BSN Lean Dessert protein powder next week banana nut bread flavor).  It i**** or miss with protein powders because all of our tastes are different.

Good luck finding some you like :)   Also don't stock up too much before your surgery because your tastes can change.   I know anything too sweet tasting I couldn't eat soon after surgery.   I used to love all the flavors of crystal light--after surgery they ALL tasted to sweet to drink.  Now I only drink the lemonade because it is sour tasting.

My surgeon said that you can do 4 cups of 1% milk along with 1 cup of lowfat powdered milk along with any sugar free flavoring, my personal fave is chocolate of course.  They said that this provides you all the protein you need in the day.  I enjoy it a lot more than the protein shakes.  :) Good luck with your surgery!!!

I like the milk idea, only problem is I am lactose intolerant! lol

Doesnt make me feel bad, just gives me some wicked gas. :) So I may not mind, but those around me would.

I have another pre-op meeting on the 10th where  I get to ask all about this stuff so I will see what they reccommend as well.

Thanks

While we are onthe subject of sugars, why is it that sugar makes people dump? I know that it does, but I don't know why.

because your stomach is so much smaller it isn't digested well enough and it goes straight through and makes you feel sick.  Some people dump, some don't.  Believe me you will know if you are dumping or not, you get nauseous, sweaty, shakey, etc.  it sucks.

Hey Nick, I use Nectar whey protein by Syntrax. It comes in all sorts of fruity flavors and since I'm lactose intolerant as well, and since whey makes me ill, I take a lactaid beforehand. I'm not a fan of protein at all, and Nectar has been by far the most tolerable. Make sure to mix it with a good bit of water, otherwise it has the consistency of un-solidified jello.

Haven't tried any protien shakes since I'm pre-op but for your question regarding "dumping" the medical explaination for this is when you get RNY the cut the stomach below the pyloric sphincter ( which is basically what allows food to pass from your stomach to your intestines). Before surgery the sphincter lets small amouts of sugar out into your intestines to be absorbed, after surgery since it isn't there any more the sugar just floods into your intestines and the body cannot absorb it fast enough thus causing you to dump.
