Medically Supervised Weightloss
SO I got my call for a surgical consult!!! YAY! Anyway my case worker informed me the my insurance required a medically supervised weight loss program. My question is will they not let me get surgery if I lose weight? What if I do will they let me get my surgery? Basically what is the goal of this medically supervised diet?
They want to see that you have tried to do this on your own and you were unsuccessful. I have a friend going through the medically supervised diet.. personally I think it is pointless for her because she wants WLS but the doctors want to see that you can be on a diet and that you wont sabotage it. I think that the cahnces are still good that they will let you have the surgery even if you loose some weight.. either way your loosing weight right?
You'll be fine as long as you dont drop below a 40 BMI. That's what I was told. My CM told me off the record, they dont look to see if you are successful or not, its honestly just a hoop to jump through. My opinion... it weeds out those that aren't really serious... because if you aren't serious you won't spend 3-6 months of your life doing this!
Ask your insurance company directly. Sometimes they just want to know that you are actually TRYING to lose weight. I saw a nutrionist during this medically supervised weight loss diet. It's all fine and dandy but if I could do it on my own I wouldnt need the surgery.
My doctor wanted me to lose some weight but I didnt lose I actually gained a pound and to be honest with you with all the things I was going thru it actually was a surprise I didnt gain more. But when I did my liquid "cleansing diet" I magically lost 8lbs in like a day!

i was told that it didnt matter if we lost weight. my nurtionest said they mainly follow what your begging weight is and see if you are able to follow a diet plan. therfore when ever you have the surgery they know that you will be able to loose weight and stick to a diet and this surgery wont be a waste of their money.
I'm pretty sure it depends on the insurance. I would second the opinion to ask them directly or look it up in their policy information. Some insurance companies will say if you lose 10% of your excess BMI that you were sucessful and don't need WLS, or at least, that's what I hear. Did your case worker say anything else about it?
As someone told me lately, everyone deserves the chance to fly!
All she said was the the insurance company required me to be on a 6 month supervised diet.. so I think that whenever I get back in contact with her I will ask her about that. I have to have like.. a nutritional consult also
Thanks for all the advice.. I will probably ask my case worker next time I talk to her.

I agree with the others, I was told to just call my insurance and ask them directly what results they want and they're required to be up front with you.
My mom did the diet and dropped below a 40 BMI and the surgeon was like, well you're not even at 40 BMI and then he looked at her paperwork and remembered she was on the diet and said oh ok you lost weight from the supervised diet and she still got the surgery. So it didn't matter that she dropped below 40 BMI.

my insurance personally didnt have me do this but, i put myself on a diet before hand and lost about 50lbs i am sure that i was wayy bigger then you, but its a blessing to have that time to get used to the life changes you are going to have to make...but i do understand that it probably may seem annoying it will be okay :)
