drinking alcohol after surgery?
Anyone here go out and have a few drinks after surgery? No, I am not talking about right after, but down the road. If so, what kinds of drinks work for you? I had the VSG (sleeve) done 2 months ago and just curious. I am just looking for someone to be honest and share their experiences with me on having an occasional ****tail. Thanks!
I had my surgery a little before yours and I just had my first glass of wine this weekend for Valentine's Day.
I tried to sip slowly and it took a good half hour to finish the thing. Even though it was slightly more than 1/2 a glass, I still felt like I had taken a good shot (or 4) of whiskey. It's not going to take much with you either probably. I'll admit, I was a pretty big drinker before surgery (socially, not everyday) and I was surprised how little it took to feel buzzed.
I am glad I did this at home so now when I do go out with friends and have another ****tail, I will know what affect it will have on me so I won't be on the floor by 8pm. I'm still not going to drink anything with carbonation or lots of sugar...so I think wine will be my drink of choice.
It would be unrealistic for me to say I'm never drinking again. I enjoy my glass of wine on occasion and that's the key...enjoy....I can enjoy one glass and not feel I have screwed up my weight loss efforts. So that's the bottom line, enjoy it but don't go overboard.
Cheers!

my dr. told me to wait until 6 months out. and exacly on my 6th month surgeversary i went out with my friends to had some drinks. i thought i would get wasted really fast. but no. the effect its like before i can drink as much as my friends. but its diferent for everybody. ITS NOT GOOD FOR ANY BODY THO!!! but i do party a lot and i like to have 1 or 2 drinks when i go out. lol.
I waited a year... doctor's orders. After that I went buck wild and drank it all. Ugh. Wine is terrible for me. I don't remember a damn thing and am irresponsible. I fear I fell into a transfer addiction but have kept it clean. I advise you to be very careful with all drinking. Myself... different drinks effect me differently. If I am drinking I only have a beer or two. Anything harder and I'm a major goner, just took me two years to figure it out :(

The more things the change, the more they're still the same.
I think I was about 3 months post op when I had my first bit of alcohol and it was some wine. I can't remember if I even had an entire glass.
4 months out I went to bars again for the first time. I find I have a lower tolerance but not majorly low like some people report. I think it is mostly from having a lower weight than from the VSG itself. I remember when I went out 4 months post op my tolerance wasn't as low as it is now.
I know some people frown upon it,but I am young and I still go out with my friends and have a good time (an average month I prob go out to the bars 2 -3 times a month and I occasionally have wine with dinner as well), and its no different post op for me as it was preop at this point out.

OMG... thank you for posting this question. I asked this qustion on the VSG forum - social drinking and smoking in the post op and I swear... one would think I was asking about smoking crack or shooting up.
Perhaps I should have posted here on this forum where us "younger" folks understand that drinking or smoking isn't such a taboo subject in our 20's.
In case .... all the best in your WLS adventure...
