Why RYN?
It seems like everyone my age is choosing RYN over the VSG. I know that insurance has to do with this but why have each of you chosen RYN?
I am having surgery next month and have recently switched from RYN to the VSG. I just feel more comfortable with it.
I guess I am jsut wondering why everyone my age is choosing RYN? Am i missing something?
Thanks

I chose the RNY, honestly, because of the restriction of it. I have a food addiction and I need something to help me restrict myself not to binge eat and RNY does that for me. I came to the decision after much reading, talking to my dr. and praying. Even though I'm not that far out from surgery, I know I made the right choice.
I don't really think one surgery is necessarily "better' than another, it's a personal choice..just like anything else in life. We all have different reasons we do what we do but as long as it works for us then that's all that matters.

I didn't have either of these procedures, but I I feel like an added concern I had when looking into the 3 was that there isn't many long term studies for VSG because it's so new. And many surgeons, including mine, won't do it. There is someone in my city who will, but by and large most doctors will recommend the procedures that they are comfortable with and know work. RNY has the highest success rates consistantly, is the most performed, and is the standard by which all the other procedures are evaluated.
that said, I think in 5 years you will probably see a lot more sleevers around than you are seeing now. just a hunch, from what I've read.

As someone told me lately, everyone deserves the chance to fly!

Hi! I just wanted to let you know that you are definitely not alone! I love my VSG, and as a previous responder said, it was a no brainer!
@ Mitchy and Aphephobicfriend...I totally agree with both of you!!
I myself have found when I posted questions on the forums here regarding RNY I get bombarded by people (none of which are on this sting by the way) telling me to look into DS or VSG...sometimes these people are down right persisiant and its actually repulsive at times...like it has been said before we are all individuals with our own issues and we (along with the surgeons advice) choose what is best for us!
Now onto the original question...I chose RNY because it doesnt involve the removal of a percentage of my stomach and I personally needed a procedure that has been around for a long time and has the results to show for it...and more importantly the surgeons (yes more than one) that I have consulted regarding WLS discourage and/or will not perform the procedure. Once again like I said before I am just stating my reasons!
Good luck with your WLS!!

My surgeon, fortunately, performs all the available surgeries, so I had my choice of procedures...but in his opinion, for someone in my age range, VSG or RNY were the best choices for my body in the long run...so they were the only surgeries I even seriously considered...I even leaned more towards the VSG because the idea of malabsorption scared me to death.
BUT...when I started therapy and meeting with my NUT, I had to face the fact that the possibility of having a bad reaction to sugar was a good thing for someone who medicated her moods with candy and soda...and wasn't always aware of "sneaking" sweets...so we weighed the options, and for my needs we did the RNY.
PLEASE go with what you know is best for you...(If I wasn't being such a sugar hooker, I still would have gone the VSG route)...i'm sure that if you're here, you've undoubtedly read the rave reviews the VSG is getting within the WLS community now. A dear friend of mine had the VSG because she was a volume eater...and she is doing amazing...singing it's praises daily!
I know everyone is different, but the imbalance towards RNY may just be because more insurance companies approve it easier, AND there are so many different variations of the surgery that still qualify it as an RNY...so the numbers are a bit decieving...
either way, stick to your choice and rock it!
