22yrold PCOSer and looking into a revision.
Hi everyone. I am a new member of OH. I am just looking to meet some people maybe that are in a similar situation as I am or could help me with the options that are available. Here's my story...
I had VBG in 2005 at the age of 19. My surgery weight was 252, I ended up getting down to 135 and maintained it for about a little more than a year. And was very proud of myself and may have gotten a little too ****y with how I looked and being young caught up in all the new social adventures I was experiencing. I had been overweight since I was 10yrs old. But in my mid teens I was diagnosed with PCOS. (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) which hindered me from losing weight on my own and keeping it off. And as the PCOS progressed the weight gain was unmangable. Which is why I had WLS. After getting down to my goal weight I kept it off for awhile and then I started to regain slowly and the invisible PCOS symptoms which completely went away started to creep back up along with the weight. Needless to say I started to slip back into depression and now feel like a complete failure. I never thought this could happen. But, it did. I'm not going to say I was the most compliant with all the restrictions but I followed them to the best of my ability at that time. I don't think I was prepared for the impact and results of what happened. I truly believe that I wasn't mature enough and now feel like I should of done more to prevent this. But meeting with my PCP he said patients with PCOS who do resort to WLS sometimes it does fail and not to blame myself. Maybe something went wrong to where I am in the position I am in now. He suggested looking into a revision surgery. Now at 22 almost 23 I feel that I am more prepared to handle myself and work this tool better than before. I am determined to lose this weight and keep it off. So that's why I am here. I have been researching and talking to some people and it seems the majority are recommending DS. Especially due to the PCOS. Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much for listening. :)

hey dawn, i too have pcos...i wasn't diagnosed until i was 22 and boy did my INability to lose weight over the years make so much sense then!! i have been approved for rny and i was initially considering the band...my surgeon flat out told me that it would take nearly two years to reach goal if i did and I'm a LIGHTWEIGHT!! (230lbs) he basically blamed it on my PCOS...we just have to work harder IT BLOWS!
ANYWAY, i was already approved for RNY and in fact have a surgery date of 3/6/09 BUT recently Ive been looking into trying to get DS instead, mainly because the restrictions on taking NSAIDs with the RNY, it really worries me to think that i cant take things like Motrin or naproxen anymore. I dont know that there are any studies that show it will be better for someone who has PCOS, but so far it seems like the best reason to do that surgery would be the better/easier life after the surgery, with the lower eating restrictions. I think that either way...my life will change forever(for the better) with either surgery.
I'm sorry you had a failed surgery in the past but I'd agree with your doctor in saying that a lot of that may have had to do with the PCOS.
I wish you the best with getting a revision..and i hope that the results and success are permanent !!!!!
Good luck

I was diagnosed with PCOS in Jan. 2007 (age 23) after suffering from it for years. With no clue as to why I couldn't lose weight or conceive baby #2. I had my RNY in August 2007. After losing 50 lbs my periods became like clock work and my PCOS symptoms disappeared. By Jan. of 2008, only a meir 5 months post-op and down 86 pounds BOOM!!! I unexpectedly got pregnant with baby#2! I was 144 lbs. the day I got my big fat positive. I was 160 lbs. the day I gave birth. Today I sit here typing this (and on my period...yuk!) and I'm 134 lbs. My body has showed ZERO signs of PCOS after losing weight.
Just wanted to share my experience with you. I wish you all the best!
I'm 25 yrs. old and RNY gave me my life back and a new baby!
Huggs!

I'm a 3month vet and had my surgery at 26. I also have PCOS. Immediately after RNY I was taken off of my Metformin. My periods began to regulate themselves and the dark patches on my body are now fading. I'm excited to read that I can hit a point where it completely dissapears. You didnt say what your current weight was but I feel your pain. My mother is 10years out of RNY and has gained some weight back. She did the 5 Day Pouch Test. Have you considered trying this? I'm not too familar with VBG but your stomach is a muscle so it can be stretched and also shrunk. She's lost 17lbs in 2 months. Which is fantastic. I know PCOS makes us carb sensitive so have you watched your carb intake? Whatever you decide to do...dont be too hard on yourself. Youre human whether your 19 or 39 and none of us are perfect!

Hey girl,
Im 26 years old and was diagnosed with PCOS at the age of 15! As for most people, weight loss has been a nightmare. I have been researching WLS for almost 7 years and will be having the DS done in late March. I chose the DS for a number of reasons, one being that it has the greatest long term weight loss/managment vs. the RNY . You dont have the dumping syndrome associated with eating sugars and your regular stomach stays intact. You had the VSG done, so youre half way there!
Come to the DS message board and we have tons of great people who will answer any question you have about anything. I post tons of crazy questions.
Good luck!

Hey! I am sorry to hear about your struggles!
I think the RNY and DS are both good options. A lot of people here on the forums push for the DS a lot... they seem to be very excited about it. Both surgeries were too drastic for me at my age (24).
I, too, have PCOS and have done very well with the band. It does take a ton of commitment though and patience, so if that's not what you're looking for... obviously it may not be right for you.
I hate the symptoms of PCOS but the weight loss has really helped. I am sorry you have to deal with PCOS... it's a curse sometimes. Because I know I have it, I am extremely strict on my carb intake. It is all that works for me.
Aside from a revision, I would also look up somewebsites about PCOS. Learn what you should be eating nutritionally..... there are a lot of things that you can adjust in your life that can really help you with the weight and symptoms, in my opinion. Perhaps if you go down that road, you can start reusing your tool (which is always there for you even if you gain) and get back down to a healthy weight.
Good luck to you!
