Hey everyone! I've been lurking on the site for quite some time now..I'm 20yrs old, 5'3" and 230lbs. I'm scheduled for a laprascopic RNY on Jan. 21st! I am so nervous and excited at the same time. I'm really worried about missing time from school. I am in an accelerated RN program so attendance is really important. My surgery is on a Wed. and I plan on going back to school on Monday yikes! I know everyone is different, but how did you feel 5 days post-op??? I also started my two week pre-op diet yesterday. It's an all liquid diet.. I can only have slimfast and SF liquids. So far it has been ok, I'm really hating it though. I'm just trying to keep my eye on the prize and keep thinking about the end result! Anyway, I'd love to make some new friends here so please add me.. I also have a myspace it's:   www.myspace.com/miissxangela   I could use as much support as possible! Well, I look forward to chatting with you guys!

Wow. Five days is pushing it. To be honest, and everyone is different, day 5 was my hardest day. I had pain and bloating. Tolerable, but I could not have gone to work. I had two weeks off. I probably could have cut it a day or two short, but I think I needed the time I had. A lot of people take three weeks off. Anyway, I don't mean to sound scary- you'll be fine and the surgery isn't that bad at all, but it takes a little while for your tummy to cooperate, you take pain meds, and you are really tired because you only get non-nutritive liquids at the beginning, for the most part.

You'll do great, but go easy on yourself!

Hey Angie, welcome to the board :)

Everyones recovery is different so its hard to answer when youll feel okay to go back. My worst days were 3 and 4. But i wasnt cleared to drive until my post-op appointment which was like 9 days post-op. I know i was feeling really well about a week out but until that point it was off and on and i would need my pain meds about once a day 5-7 days out of surgery. Hopefully youll have a super fast recovery and back in class in no time! Good luck with everything!

Thanks for the info... If I don't show up to school on the Monday following my surgery, I will fail the class and I will have to wait 4months to get back into the program. Now I'm having a really hard time deciding if I should postpone surgery until after I graduate in April. I'm starting to think that would be the best time to do it  I'm soooo confused!!!

Have you discussed the surgery with the program administrators?  They might be able to give you a brighter insight.

The more things the change, the more they're still the same.

I talked to my school's director today and she made it so I can have 7 days off.. which isn't much more, but two days is better than nothing!

Congratulations on your upcoming surgery date but I also agree that 5 days is cutting it awfully short.  My doctor kept me in the hospital for 4 days and I didn't even use my pain pump thingy but once while there.  I think 5 days post op was mostly I know TMI but honestly it was one of the bloating and gas/sore feeling days.  The hospital I was in taught us some really good streaches to relieve the pain though.  I'd love to share if you want.  Just let me know and I'll look for my papers!

I wish you the best during surgery and a speedy recovery!  Everybody is different remember that....
