Hey ladies and gent, I just have a few questions first off let me introduce myself,  I'm Vonna 21 years old and having open gastric bypass on Jan 12th with Dr.Caruana from buffalo. I'm suppose to be staring back at school on Jan 26th to continue my education in Nursing (so NO clinicals)I was wondering do you think I should be good to go two week after surgery? Also I was wondering if any of you had any suggestions on the type of food and drinks to commute to school with I'm only going to go on mondays and wednsdays from 1-6P and I work 3 12hr shifts any suggestions, comments or tips will be appreciated. Also congradulation to ALL of you who have started this journey or who are going to start you are in good hands with the LORD, and keep it up you are all my inspiration

I work the 3 12's as a CNA at the moment and I just posted a similar question on here. You can check the answers there too if you would like. It kind of seems to vary from person to person Most people that have answered me have had the RNY and I'm getting the lap band so Im still not sure how long I should take off when I get my surgery. Good luck and I'll check your replies to see what people tell you.

Hey Vonna!  Welcome, to the group!!  With an open surgery, I would be worried it wouldn't give you enough time to heal.  With the Laproscopic approach, I wouldn't think it would be too much, but do call your surgeon and ask him.

Foods? You'll be on mushies still... cheese, yogurts, shakes.  Your surgeon probably has a preferred list as well.

Good luck!!

hi girl!! wellcome to the board.
my name is mariana, 23, 11 month out. RNY. very haapy about that lol.
i had lamparoscopic rny and i was able to go back to school a week after, but if you are gonna have an open bypass i`m not sure if its a good idea to be back that soon. ask your dr. altho its 12 days away you may be 100% fine by then.

see ya around girlie.
hugs
mariana.

Hello!  congrats on your upcoming surgery and continuing your education...I think that's so important.

I had my RNY lap. so the only thing I can compare an open one to would be my c-section I had with my son.  Honestly, even at 2 weeks I was still having trouble standing for long periods of time without pain and couln't even get up from a chair without taking it VERY slow.   But, a c-section is lower on your abs than this will be so maybe it will be different.  I hope you will be able to get back into it so quickly but don't push yourself too fast too soon, otherwise you might have a whole other set of problems.  Your surgeon will be be able to give you more of an opinion.

Best of luck!!

~Emily~
