Birth Control....kinda personal!

Hi ladies! I have a couple questions for any of you out there who might have some answers. Have any of you used the NuvaRing as a form of birth control? I know how it works and how to use it and I have read the information sheet that comes in the box but I have some more questions. I will warn you......they are kinda personal so I hope some of you are brave enough to answer them for me! LOL! J/K.....here goes.....

1. When you take the ring out, how soon does your period usually start?
2. How long does your period last? Is it just a couple days or does it last for the entire time that the ring is out until you put the new one in?
3. Are you still protected from pregnancy when the ring is out for the seven day break before you put a new one in?

Ok......sorry if this was too gaphic! Hope it doesn't offend anyone....especially the guys on this site! LOL!

Thanks in advance for your help!

 Hi!

I used the NR before I had my Mirena IUD put in.  I actually really liked the NR but it was more cost-effective for me to go the other route. I think some people are apprehensive to use it but honestly I couldn't even tell that I had it in.  I hope I can answer some of your questions.

1 - My period usually started a day or two after the ring was taken out but I'm sure that might depend on several individual factors.

2.  My periods would last anywhere from 3-6 days.  Sometimes I would still be having the tail end light period when I inserted a new ring but they it usually was done shortly there after.  Very much like the pill.

3. When the NR is out, its just like the BC pill placebos that you take for 7 days at the end of the pack to start your period, so yes you should be protected from pregnancy while it is out.  The same factors as to what increases your chances of pregnancy are pretty much the same ie, insertion and taking out on time, antibiotic use, etc.  I'm pretty sure it has the same effective rate as the pill when used correctly.  It worked for me, I never got pregnant or had any scares while using it.

I hope this helps you.  BC is always very confusing as what to try and what will work for each person.  Believe me, I've pretty much been on form out there!  I hope this method will work for you because it's much easier than taking a pill every day!

Hey Karen,

I switched over to the Nuvaring from the pill after surgery so i have been on it for 5 months and and i LOVE it :) Ill try to answer your questions as best i can :)

1. When i take my ring out on sunday, i usually start on tuesday or wednesday.

2. The ONLY down part ive found about the ring is my period does last a bit longer than when i was on the pill. I usually go about 5 days and with the pill it was only 2 or 3, but not having to remember and take a pill at the same time every day totally makes up for it lol.

3. Those 7 days off you are still covered with the 99% as the rest of the time.

hope this was of some help :)

Hey Courtney!

WOW! Thanks for the information! I have never been on birth control before in my life so this is the first kind that I have tried! I did not want to take a pill.....i am the world's worst at taking anything other than my vitamins on time.....so my dr said to try the ring! I have only been using it for a month but so far, so good!

Anyway, thanks again for your help! I appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions!

Just as a quick note, my GYN said that NuvaRing can be used for three months straight, so you only get your period 4 times a year. So instead of waiting a few days between rings, you simply insert a new one right away. Hope that helps.

WOW! I hadn't heard that but that is definitely something to look into and consider! Thanks for the information!

I forgot to mention the fact you can skip the period part also.  I use to do that the majority of the time because honestly, who wants to have their period?  Not me!

I LOVE my NR... best change I ever made (b4 the RNY of course).  I was always forgetting my pills, at least once or twice.  With the ring I don't even have to think about it.  Just twice a month to put it in and take it out.

1 -- about three days
2 -- until I put the next ring in, and then it stops pretty quickly.  But my periods are lighter than they were with the OCP, which was lighter than with nothing.  Not that I should, but a regular tampon can last me 12+hours, no issues.
3 -- absolutely, the same as the pill

Extra notes:
I take mine out in the shower at least once a week to rinse.  i am terrified of yeast infections and the like.
I can't feel it during normal life, but I CAN feel it during sex sometimes, as can my bf.  Sometiemes it's just there, somtimes it's uncomfortable and I run to the BR to take it out.

Good luck!
