Just got home from surgery on friday... feel like crap/tumor
As for the post-op part... I am still feeling pretty crappy (which sucks because I read all these posts about how people are feeling great). I actually felt SO MUCH better the day of surgery than I do right now. My stomach hurts every time I eat (aka drink) something, the incision where my drain is hurts every time I move (none of the other incision sites hurt though, so that is a good thing), I have a heavy/painful feeling in my chest, and to top it all of I am on my period (thank you mother nature, you have AMAZING timing lol). And my period is SO much worse than normal because of the blood thinners I am on (and the doctor wanted me to stop taking my birth control for now because he thinks it might have something to do w/ the tumor). And to top it all off I only have enough pain killers to get me through till tuesday night... after that I am screwed.
And all of the pain I am in when I eat/ drink anything is making it REALLY hard for me to get in my protein and water... if it was not for the pain that would be no problem.
So basically I dont know what to do and am SO frustrated (still SO glad I had the surgery though) and can not wait for this week to be over so I can feel better and so I can have some peace of mind (hopefully).
You definitely didnt read from me about how great I felt after the surgery....well maybe when the morphine was still attached but after that I was in quite a bit of pain. I got in to the habit of being strategic about my limited pain medicine and instead of taking it just when it wore off I would take it when I knew I needed it at most which was mainly at night before bed because it was hard to move with the pain. Your doctor should prescribe you more pain meds and did they give you the pills that go up your butt (I'm having a vocab memory loss lol). The pills are part pain med part amazing and they help stop the queasy feeling too. Those pills were great when my body didnt want to hold food down the right way. I mean sometimes it would hold it down but it was the worst feeling. My mom who had the surgery 10 years ago told me to keep a journal of what I ate. I learned very quickly that unlike before the surgery I now must EAT before I drink to prevent myself from feeling queasy...also carbs arent my friend anymore. Everyone is different thats why keeping the journal for the first couple of weeks can really be helpful.
Stay strong. I'm telling you from personal experience...I questioned why I had this surgery everyday for awhile and the suddenly EVERYTHING was better. I mean everything. The pain was away, I was losing weight, and slowly becoming healthier. Your surgery was a blessing because they wouldnt have found that tumor on your liver unless they had a reason to cut you open. So they found it and now they can fix it. Stay positive you just saved your own life in more ways than you probably know!
I'm not going to say its okay to not take your vitamins and protein. Especially since the protein helps so much in rebuilding your muscles HOWEVER...I was HORRIBLE with it in the beginning. SOOOOO horrible with it. I mean if my doctor knew he would be so dissapointed but I'm here alive and well and doing much better. The entire surgery and recovery is a learning process. Dont over do it....is one of the first hard lessons I had to learn. My RN told me dont lift anything heavier than a gallon of milk. I thought 'whatever' and did laundry...I went from feel medium pain to intense pain because of that laundry load and learned immediately that I was making it worse by not listening. So my advice would be to relax, walk, relax, walk, and sleep as much as you can.

Hey Nicole,
Like Tenille, I want to say, you didn't hear happy thoughts from me! The first few days were AWFUL. Words do not begin to explain the badness.... But it does eventually get better, and then the pain and the nausea start to fade into the background, and you sort of forget. Well, maybe just a little.
As for the tumor, no point paying interest on trouble before it's due. There's a ton of non-cancer things it could be, and most likely is. And if not, just think how blessed you are to have caught it early, so that you can be treated...
My advice to you? skip the vitamins for now. Your body can handle a week or two without. My surgeon actually says to start them on week 3. Don't try to EAT anything... I am 3 weeks out, and really, really love my pureed soups, but any more solid than that, is not fun. Don't try to drink a lot at a time. Don't try to drink anything really hot or cold. Some warm soup might help soothe your tummy a bit, but stick to room temperature for the most part. And drink out of a shot glass -- it's an ounce. Sip at it over ten minutes, then refill. If you can, add some protein powder to whatever you are drinking, you won't get in 70g to start, but even 20g is better than nothing. I take a 750 ml bottle, one pkg of singles CL tang-grapefruit, and a scoop of unflavored powder. Mix and sip. If I drink two over the day, that's 30g of protein.
Keep walking, sipping, and taking pain meds. And just breathe. The worst will be over soon!

Painwise? Call the doc. I wouldn't recommend not taking your vitamins, etc if he's prescribed them. Run everything by him first. As far as water, I had a horrible time drinking plain water. I added crystal light or a version of it and it was sooo much better- something about the pH.
Good luck!

I'm really sorry to hear about the tumor, I really hope and pray for you that it turns out to be nothing. Scary enough going through surgery without that.
Just wanted to let you know that I'm right there along with you. I had my surgery last Monday and it's been rough. Today is the first day where it's not horrible pain to get up off the couch, just pretty bad pain. It also hurts to take a big breath, which stinks. However, it is improving little by little even though it doesn't seem like it. I don't know about you, but eating is such a chore I almost don't even want to but I know I have to. I am just going on the words of everyone else that it will get better and I hope for the both of us it will be soon!!
Let us know how it all goes when you get the biopsy results!

I'm so sorry to hear they found a tumor. I know how scary it is....I had a grapefruit size tumor on my ovary when I was 22 --I had surgery to have it removed because it was so large and it turned out to be nothing serious. But waiting for the results was terrible! That was about 24 years ago, but I remember it. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Call Dr. Myers office and tell them you are still in a lot of pain and will be out of meds before you go in for your follow-up. It is painful, but it will get better. I had a really hard time getting in my fluids at first. That too will get easier. Drink as much as you can - you don't want to get dehydrated. Let them know how much trouble you are having when you call about the pain - they may be able to help you.
Hang in there! You will start feeling better every day - probably in a couple of days.
Take care of yourself, and call Dr. Myers!
Patty
and prayers.
