Hoping that they'll understand....

Ok,

So my surgeon told me at my consult that I would need to lose 10lbs and stop smoking. Well....

Good news is I've stopped smoking...I don't even crave it. It's a thing of the past and I'm grateful for it.

Bad news is that I've actually gained 12lbs. I've been dieting for 2-3 months now and vigorously exercising for 5 months. Anything I do will not help....I guess what I fear the most is that my surgeon will not go with the surgery and cancel it because I havent lost anything, no matter what I've tried. It's hard for me to lose it and I'm surprised that I've only gained 12. I figured it would be 30 like it always is. My question, however, is if anyone has been though this ordeal and if they have, was their procedure cancelled? Postponed? What did your surgeon do? My pre-Admission testing is coming up in 10 days an I'd like to know if I at least have a fightign chance for it before I make the trip up there...Any input would be helpful.

Thanks for listening,

Whitney

My Dr. told me if I didn't lose a lil weight before surgery it would be cancled. He also said if he got in there and the liver was too hard to work with he would close you back up and not the surgery at all.

Maybe you could go on a liquid diet for a few days? Low sodium soups and a salad a day is the diet I had to do before surgery. I started at 335 and day of surgery I was 321. And that was in 2 wks.

Call the surgeon and talk to them - I think he will be happy you quit smoking... a lot of people gain weight when they do so anyways... see what they suggest for you. I do not reccomend doing any liquid diet without talking to the surgeon first as some are against them. Honestly is always the best way to go and you both can work together.

i agree call and talk to them, ask them about going on a liquid diet or at least a soft food kinda diet, buckel down right, try to loose at least those 12 pounds, dont give up, you've worked this hard to get this far, i encourage you to plot your daily food intake into something, like fitday.com or whichever site, and count everything that goes in your mouth, even the butter that goes on the toast. that can kinda show you how many calories you are intaking, also dont drink any of yyour calories right now. good luck.

First of all, congratulations on quitting smoking, that is one major monkey off your back.  good for you.

As for the weight, call and ask them.  If they are serious about cancelling, you could try the optifast regime.  If you have to, I believe you will manage to take off those ten pounds.  Remember, you can do anything for a short while, we have all done it.  Do what you have to.

I believe in you!

I know what you are going through I was told I needed to loose 20 pounds before I could have surgery I was told this a year ago. I was all approved by insurance and I had passed the phyc. tests and my nutrtion classes and all that was stopping me was the dam 20 pounds I worked my ass off I tried everything I was at the point where if someone would have told me the only way to loose the weight was to jump off a bridge I would have done it. I had proven to them that I had been working on it I showed him my check ins at my gym and my personal tranier wrote him a letter. My doctor agreed to do a reassestment and when I went in I was expecting him to say you haven't lost the weight I can't do it yet and he felt around and said Valerie I can tell you have been working hard and I can tell you have lost inches and your liver has shrunk I feel comfortable going ahead with the surgery. You crarry most of your weight in your hips butt and thighs like a typical woman where if you a male and carried your weight in you abdomin I wouldn't do it but I can tell that you have worked hard and you have maintained the same weight all year and you should at least be proud of yourself that you havent gained weight  I now got my surgerydate of Feb 4th. One thing that I would check into to I went to my regular MD  and she put me on a appatite supprssant and a motabolism enhancer and since then I have lost 15 pounds! But DON'T give up on the working out even though you can't see any results on the scale I am sure that things are happing with your body. I would call your doctor and state your concerns and ask him to just reevaluate cuz I can imagine that it would be the biggest let down to go in on your surgery day and him turn you away! I have faith things will work out!! Good luck and keep us updated
