I have multiple pre-op questions!

Hey everyone!  Sorry I haven't been on here lately.  My sisters and friends all went to a New Kids on the Block concert last week in Minneapolis.  Freakin awesome after 15 years of waiting to see them.

Anyway!  I have a few questions that I thought you guys could possibly help me with.  I'll just list them so it doesn't get too hard to read.

1)  I've been reading about pre-surgery physicals.  My surgeon doesn't require this, should I have one done by my family doc anyway?  I had one in April for my yearly exam and all was well.  Some books I've read go into getting endoscopes, Echocardios, etc.  Do I really need those or are they more for people with prior health concerns?

2)  I was sent a packet of things by the surgeon to fill out and read before my class.  Obviously they don't want me to gain weight before the surgery but they didn't say anything about losing any either.  I see many people on here losing pre surgery.  Do some surgeons require a certain weight loss before they operate?

3) Did anyone start eating post-op, pre-op to get prepared?  What did you do?  I finally kicked the caffeine and had no headaches..that was a huge step for me because I was a coffee, diet soda freak.

4)  I exercise regularly and I know I'll be anxious to get back to it after surgery.  How long before we can get back into it?

5)  What is the best book on the topic that you've read?  Are there any good recipe books for eating after surgery?  I love to cook but now, obviously, I'll have to do it much healthier.

Ok, I think that's all for now.  I'm sure I"ll think of more later.

Thanks so much!!
~Emily~

P.S.  I finally told my parents about the surgery.  They are worried but very supportive.  I feel so much better!

hey emily. wow the new kids on the block . that`s awesome. I glad you had fun.
ok so about your cuestions.

1)  I did not had thos exams. and my surgery went great. some insurance want you to get it.  but is not life o death.

2, 3) i had a preop diet 2 weeks before surgery (protein drinks and 1 piece of chicken breast at lunch) this diet it`s to help to reduce the fat around your liver. that makes easier to introduce the surgery instruments. is not for your smotach or nothing like that.
this diets that some people do for 6 months before surgery its an insurance thing. (i did no had to do it `cuz i paid for mine)

4)about excercise your gonan feel it. it`s gonna be around 2 months until you are confortable in off. to do a high impact exercise. but you can walk since day one. so you can take long walks for exercising while you heal.

5) there is a lot of web sides that are very good like betty crocker. just serch in the web.

don´t worry about anything emily you are gonna do great. i can tell for your cuestions that you are gonna be commited with this surgery and you are gonna work it for sure. so, enjoy everyminute.

take care
hugs.

1)  If you had a physical in April I say you are fine... just go with whatever your surgeon requires.

2)  Depends on the surgeon, some do some do not.... I had chosen to lose weight on my own prior to surgery, my surgeon didnt require it, however I did hit a weight where he asked me to stop losing and maintain (it took me 9 months from first visit to get surgery).

3) Since my process took 9 months I used them wisely... I cut back on soda, junk foods and especially fast food - I didnt want my system to go into shock after surgery... I tried to make small healthy changes over time so I could be as adjusted as possible. I also started to exercise - just a little walking at first then moved up with more intensive things. IMO get as healthy as you can now and it will really make your surgery and recovery much easier.

4)  My surgeon required 20-30 minutes of walking as soon as you were out of the hospital. At 2 weeks post-op I was cleared for regular exercise except for anything ab related, that had to wait until after 6-8 weeks out.

5)  For the emotional side I like The Beck Diet Solution. For cookbooks I mostly get recipies online... I just make them healthy if they already are not - Alton Brown and Rachel Ray are two of my favs to look up... you can get a lot of recipies at food.com and about.com... I search 'low fat cooking' or 'low carb cooking' and go from there. I have a few cook books at home but usually like searching online and pulling up a recipe and tweaking it.

First visit to surgeon - 288 ~ bmi 45.1
2 week pre-op 252 ~ bmi 39.5
Total lost - 153 Since surgery - 117!
Goal weight - 155 (mine) 180 (surgeons)
Current weight - 135 (2020 I lost 10lbs due to dedicating myself to working out more and being in better shape)

1/14/2025 still maintaining 135 :-)

Extended TT, lipo, fat injections - 11/2011

BA/BL/Arm Lift - 7/2014

Scar revision on arms - 3/2015

HALO laser on arms/neck 9/2016

Thigh Lift 10/2020

Thigh Lift revision 10/2021

1-I didn't have to have a physical preop, but I also didn't have diabetes or heart disease or anything like that. I would think that it depends on your insurance and your comorbidities.

2-My surgeon thought it was great if you lost weight but didn't make it mandatory. The main thing he requested was not to go on an all out binging rampage and gain weight. I think it is up the each surgeon.

3-I stopped drinking diet coke and tried to cut out sugar. Since you can't eat sugar afterwards it is helpful, because you can deal with your sugar withdrawels before hand, instead of trying to do it and deal with your pain.

4- My surgeo left it up to us. We were up walking in the hospital but that is so we can go home. I started back to the gym after 2 wks. I couldn't do any weights or stomach exercises for 6-8 wks post op.

5- I love to cook too! Honestly, I can recommend a good book. I was worried about my husband because he can't cook and I have always made home made meals for him. The first two months though he just ate tv dinners and what he could make for himself. You aren't going to feel up to cooking. Honestly, at two months I started cooking dinners again but had to make "soft"t things that I could eat too.

Hi Emily :)

** It all depends on what your insurance requires. Some don't require anything mine require an Upper GI, Gallbladder Ultrasound, Urinalysis, EKG, Chest Xray, Psych Eval, Sleep Study, Endoscopy, 6 months nutrionist appointment, 6 months of a workout routine documented, 6 months of seeing my PCP, and finally tons of lab work. It's a lot but it gave me peace of mind to see how healthy I was but not all insurances require this.

2)  I was sent a packet of things by the surgeon to fill out and read before my class.  Obviously they don't want me to gain weight before the surgery but they didn't say anything about losing any either.  I see many people on here losing pre surgery.  Do some surgeons require a certain weight loss before they operate?

**My doctor request I lose 5% - 10%. I gained a pound, he wasnt very happy but didnt cancel the surgery. However the liquid diet 2 days before the surgery cleared me out quite a bit and I lose 8lbs.

3) Did anyone start eating post-op, pre-op to get prepared?  What did you do?  I finally kicked the caffeine and had no headaches..that was a huge step for me because I was a coffee, diet soda freak.

**I tried the dieting but there's a reason I was having the surgery. I have a problem with sticking to anything.  However, 2 days before is the required liquid diet and I've pretty much been stuck to it. The diet consisted of anything see thru which means water, jello and broth yummy.

4)  I exercise regularly and I know I'll be anxious to get back to it after surgery.  How long before we can get back into it?

**I'm a week out and I can def say I'm not ready. However, I did clean yesterday for about an hour and it felt good. But hardcore workout not this soon.

5)  What is the best book on the topic that you've read?  Are there any good recipe books for eating after surgery?  I love to cook but now, obviously, I'll have to do it much healthier.
The best book I've read regarding the surgery is definitely the preperation manuel my doctor's office gave us. Does your doctor give you one? I love to cook as well. I think my biggest challenge will be changing my meals to be less fatty and unhealthy.

Good luck to you!
