Question about lifting post-op.

Hi!

I was reading one of my surgery books last night and a question popped into my brain that those who've been though this might be able to help me.

Throughout the chapter about post-op, it said we shouldn't lift anything more than 10lbs for the first couple of weeks and then nothing heavier than 25lbs for 6 months.  To me, that seemed like awhile but my problem is my 21 month old son is heavier than 25lbs and there is no way he wouldn't let me go a day without holding him, let alone 6 months!

I was just wondering if that's actually what we have to do or more so a guideline.  When I had my gallbladder out last year, I was fine to hold him after about a week or so.  I know this is a little more indepth of a surgery but 6 months??   I don't want to risk a hernia or tear but I was thinking this "rule" was more of a case by case basis?

Did anyone else have this problem and what did you do?   Thanks!!!

Emily

Six months seems a bit excessive, I would double check with my surgeon.  I couldn't lift for a few weeks, then gradually added weight.

It was nice not having to carry the water jugs out to the rabbit barn during those day, lol.

A few weeks is what I was thinking too.  Plus there are probably a lot of factors that go along with that.  I'm pretty active anyway so I'm sure someone who was more seditary would have to go longer.  Thanks for the response!

I probably would have lifted right out of the hospital... but once fatigue set in... wow.  I was horribly tired and weak during the third week.  We have cats and a pomeranian who love laps... I had pillows all the time to protect my tummy!

I remember the fatigue with my c-section and gallbladder and that was bad.  I was tired all the time.

I a big believer in our bodies will tell us what we can handle and when..so I'm just going to go with that.

We have 3 cats at our house too.   They love to kneed my stomach so I'll have to do the pillow trick too for awhile.

The cats are attached to my parents' throats as soon as they sit down at night.

I work at a pre-school /day care and had an issue becuase my boss wouldnt let me come bac****il i had no lifting restrictions. After talking to my doctor about it she had me come in at 5 weeks out to check me and then gave me the go-ahead to have NO restrictions at 6 weeks. I would just talk to your surgeon about it and ask them what you should do. Everyone is different and ever recovery is different. Have a good night! :)
