Is Younger Better?

Hello, I just recently got approved for lap RNY and my surgery date is set for September 17th.  I have been reading the message boards on here and have found them all very helpful.  Today was the first time that I found this certain message board and thought this would be the perfect place to ask this question!  On the main RNY message board I am reading a lot about having loose skin and other issues/problems.  My doctor has told me since I am relatively still young (25) it will help when I start losing weight and the skin will "hopefully" shrink up some.  I have a BMI of 59 and I am wondering what everyone else's experiences have been in this situation.  I know it is obvious that I will have loose skin and probably need some plastics but have ya'll noticed it a little less severe because you are younger?  Thanks for the input!  Christine

Hi Christine!  My BMI was 56 when I had surgery and yes, I had alot of excess skin.  I think it also depends on where your weight is distributed, the amount of stretch marks, etc.  My skin was so bad, my panni hung to my knees- ya grosses me out too.  I still have some on my back and arms, as well as my inner thigh, but thank God my tummy skin is gone.  I've worked out since allowed to and I can see a huge difference in my arm definition from a year ago and today.  Although it takes time, I do believe the skin does tighten as much as it possibly can.

Welcome to the group!

Thanks for your input Jaci!  I have read a lot about it depending on where it is distributed on your body so I believe that is true.  I also want to start working out as soon as possible after the surgery.  I think that helps a lot as well.  Was the plastic surgery more painful than the WLS surgery?  Just curious...

The Plastics were most painful because I had an open rash exposed once the skin was removed.  The rest was bearable with tylenol.  I do have a high pain tolerance, though.

Hi Christine~  I was 26 when I had my RNY.  My BMI was about 48 when I had my RNY and I had quite a bit of excess skin.  I think it depends a lot of where it's stretched out the worst and how long you've been overweight.  I don't know if it was less severe since I was younger, but perhaps it was.  I see that you're at Ft Irwin... are you a military wife as well?

Hello!  Yes, I am a proud military wife... although sometimes it does make me want to pull my hair out!  By the looks of your nickname you are a military wife as well?  Where are ya'll stationed?  Thanks for the input on the excess skin.  I am trying to think beyond the surgery and the skin is worrying me a bit.  I am only 5'2 (on a good day) so I am guessing the excess skin is going to be a problem.  I keep going from being supper excited about getting the surgery to terrified.  I just wi**** was here and done already!  Have a good one!

Yep I'm an Air Force wife~ We're stationed in Oklahoma.  It's been bloody hot here lately lol. Yeah the skin is an annoyance, but it's worth having to lose all that weight, IMHO.  It's natural to be nervous and scared, but trust me, it's so worth it!  It's the greatest thing I ever did to have my RNY.

There are pictures of my excess skin on my profile.
I will put it this way - you will have excess skin, being younger I think the way we look in the end bothers us more than people who are older - start saving for plastic surgery NOW... everybody told me "youll be fine" blah blah blah and now I am looking at 30-40,000$ worth of plastic surgery to 'fix' my body... I wouldnt call that 'fine' :-)
You will have wiggle, jiggle, sag.. there are many factors that go into how well the skin snaps back and being young is just one part of it.
My friend had surgery when she was 24 - so far shes had a circumfrencial tummy tuck, arms, thigh lift, liposuction, and revisions on her arms and thighs. Her next surgery will be additional liposuction and breast implants (she carried her weight in her arms/legs, they were very large post-op and looked even larger because her torso is so small.

First visit to surgeon - 288 ~ bmi 45.1
2 week pre-op 252 ~ bmi 39.5
Total lost - 153 Since surgery - 117!
Goal weight - 155 (mine) 180 (surgeons)
Current weight - 135 (2020 I lost 10lbs due to dedicating myself to working out more and being in better shape)

1/14/2025 still maintaining 135 :-)

Extended TT, lipo, fat injections - 11/2011

BA/BL/Arm Lift - 7/2014

Scar revision on arms - 3/2015

HALO laser on arms/neck 9/2016

Thigh Lift 10/2020

Thigh Lift revision 10/2021

Hi Jennifer!  I am beginning to learn that it is truly different for everyone.  I am planning on needing some type of plastic surgery and I am definitely starting to save now.  Although I am hoping to get my insurance to help a bit but I am not crossing my fingers!  As for right now I am just happy to be getting the surgery... and I will worry about the other issues later.  I just wanted to get some type of input!  Thanks Christine

I am praying that all i will "need" is a TT and maybe breast lift when I am done with this weight loss!
