How did most of you feel after 5 weeks?

So, I was scheduled for surgery on 07/08/08 but cancelled due to school conflicts. I am currently in my 2nd year of nursing school and have a very hectic schedule.

I was planning on having the surgery after graduation but have now decided to do it over my winter break in December (I have 5 weeks off from school). I am planning on going back to work (part time 16hr/week) 2 weeks after surgery.
The biggest change this time is that I am NOT telling anyone but my closest friends that I am having surgery. The last time, I got so much negative feedback that I got petrified to do it. I have made my decision not to listen to their negativity and give everyone a big suprise when I go back to school. I am not even sure I want to tell my mother because she (being a nurse) is so adimant that I am going to get sick she wants me to "just diet and exercise"...

Anyhoo. I know everyone's experiences are different, however, I like most of you am young and relatively healthy so I am keeping a positive outlook and know that I will be okay. How did most of you feel after 5 weeks?

i was up and walking a couple of hours after surgery and i really didnt experience a whole lot of pain. If i moved the wrong way too quickly then i was just sore. around 5wks i was eating some things that resembled food :) and was getting around fairly well. but the down side to that is that was the trial and error stage.and i remember a lot of nausea and throwing up because you are reintroducing yourself to food and alot of things i just couldnt eat. even though most of it was good for me. and u still have to worry about dumping. I wouldnt try to work 2 wks after, that could be a disaster, i tried to go back to school 2 wks after and ended up getting dizzy and passing out. your main goal will be to hydrate and it was so hard keeping track of your fluids when you are worried about other things. but after the 5 wks if you are a pretty quick healer you should be good to go back to school.and if u are able to, i would try to wait until at least 4wks before trying to work because that is when you start to feel like yourself again, but only better

You'll be fine and dandy by the time you go back to school- of course that is complication free :)

Nursing students have my utmost respect!  Those at my school fight for limited positions in the programs.  They all have the highest GPAs I've ever seen, its crazy!  But totally inspiring!

The more things the change, the more they're still the same.

hi.

I had surgery when i was starting school the 3th week of school to be exact. i had my surgery in houston and i live in mexico so i had to fly there. i arrived a monday, and had my surgery on thruesday, and the next friday i got back home. so that`s a week and a day after surgery. and that monday i got back to work 9:00 to 2:00 pm, and then i went to school: 4:00 to 9:00 pm. without a problem. i got little bit tired. but i was so sick to be home that it was great to me to be out. it`s a very fast recovring so don´t worry you`ll be fine sooner than you think.
so good luck.

I had my surgery on 06/11/2008 and I am feeling great.  I went back to work a week and a half after my surgery, I got a little tired but I just made sure I rested more.  Things have gotten way better and my enery levels are getting up there.  I start school back August 18th and I am ready to go!

I had surgery tuesday, out of the hospital thursday, worked 2 hours at my p.t job saturday and was back to work monday - the first week I was exhausted.. it was a struggle, after that I would say for the first month post-op I was very tired... had to force myself out of bed in the morning, had to nap during lunch at work, napped after work and in bed super early - but I survived. Some people get a lot of energy post-op, I was not one of them... it took me a long long time before my energy levels were more consistant and I wasnt constantly exhausted.
Eitherway at 5 weeks out I was pretty 'normal'... I was eating fine, getting in my protein, exercising and doing my daily activities - just sleepy and needed naps :-)
