Getting Paranoid About the Hernia thing

Who is more likely to have a hernia after surgery?  Does that happen less in young people?

I don't think hernias are related to a patient's age.  Hernias can happen with any abdominal surgery, so I don't think that your risk for hernias with WLS is any higher than others.  Just make sure to follow your doc's instructions after surgery and wait an appropriate amount of time before heavy lifting and doing other strenuous activity - the causes of most hernias post-op - and you'll do a lot to reduce your risk.

depends on the hernia. all it is is stress in the muscle tissue. for instance i had a hiatial hernia, one that's inside between your stomach and diaphragm, since i was about 8 years old or younger, that was fixed when i just went into WLS.  as long as you are careful with the stress points or openings after surgery you will be fine. the smaller the initial wound, the less likely you will be to have a hernia. that's why a lot of people prefer the laproscopic surgeries!

I developed a hernia on the incision after my WLS (actually during my first pregnancy).  It was not as bad as I thought it would be but was somewhat bothersome.  They took care of it during my tummy tuck.  I was 27 when I got the hernia.
