Birth Control questions,..

Is it true that oral, hormonal birth control is completely out of the question once I have the RNY? I want to say that I was told initially thatit was because the portion of your small intestine that absorbs the hormones is removed,...but I think I remember seeing posts from others talking about taking their birth control pills.I don't really dig the other hormonal options, nor do I like the idea of an IUD. Does anyone know anything about this?

I just talked to by ob about this....she said there are still mixed reviews about it but that the effectivness goes down and many people complain of nausea/vomiting after taking the pill since their stomach is so small. She recommended the Nuva Ring, so I went with that.  I have heard some great things about it so we will see.... Good Luck Jessica

No it is not out of the question... my surgeon states if you use your birthcontrol 100% correct then its perfectly effective... however a backup method is suggested for at least the first 6 months if not a year. There is no studies or proof as to the effectiveness post-RNY. I spoke to my OB about it and she said I should be fine... I am 2 years out and still no kids so it must be working ;-) I take the BC where I get no periods so that would be a good indicator to me if it was working correctly or not... no issues here.  As a side note I will say my OB (and studies Ive read) say *many* people do not take their oral BC correctly - you HAVE to read the instructions and see what it says about when you should take it, what to do if you miss a pill etc. Most pills you are suppose to take the same time each day and if you dont they lose their effectiveness.... so forgetting and taking it the afternoon instead of the morning could cause issues ya know? I read my stuff back and forth and make sure I know how to properly take!

well my suregon said the pill, was fine and needed! well the pill was giving me issues, and i cant have the iud, i got pregnant on the patch, and didnt care for the idea of nuva ring. but i just got something called implanon, it gets put into your arm, and is good for 3 years and is very effective. i have only had it for a month, but i must say i love it and is the easiest birthcontrol thus far that i have tried. its has made me regular and my dr said usually within the first year you stop having your period or makes it much much lighter and shorter. oh and its a progesterion only bc

Will the arm implant things cause you to gain weight like depo will?

I never gained weight on depo - in fact every time I got a shot I dropped 5lbs and would keep it off.

I was just wondering the samething! I am not good with any birth control other than condoms and they arent safe enough. I have been on the pill before and I had horrible reactions to it and then after I had my son I got the mirena IUD and I had to have it removed because it caused ALOT of problems and I got very sick from it. I need to go to the OB and talk to him about it because im going to be needing it real soon. I was also wondering about the Nuva Ring.... and the arm implant doesnt sound like that bad of a thing...

yea, I just googled it and it doesnt sound too bad. Not to be too gross, but does the mirena have a string that hangs out all the time??  someone told me that it does,...kinda freaks me out,..the idea of that,..  lol  :P

I have mirena -and yes there are strings, but you can't feel them and DH says he can't feel them either.  I've had it since like last March, I've never had kids - hated depo (made me crazy) and didn't like/trust pills and nuva ring didn't work for me either.  Mirena was a pain at first (placement was NOT fun, but it was bearable and worth it) but I love it now since i don't have to worry about anything for 4 1/2 more years.
