Still can't decide on which surgery!

So I have been racking my brain for months on which surgery I should have and I still have not made up my mind! Both surgeries (the RNY and the VSG) have their positives.  For one the VSG will have less complications in the long run. BUT it does not bypass the intestines so if I eat crapy it can obsorb the fat and not let me lose the right weight. I know myself well enough to know that on all diets before I have cheated so how do I know I won't cheat on this diet? Obviously i won't be able to eat as much but will i ever get down small enough to where I am satisfied with how I look? (don't worry I don't want to be like 110 pounds or anything jsut under 150).  So why not get the RNY right? Well because I heard there are a lot more complications that could happen with it. I heard that the malnutrition and stones and god knows what else and twisted bowls jsut fun things like that can happen.  So which should I do? will I be able to do the VSG and stick with it until I am skinny healthy and happy? will I gain the wait back? I know I cna have the RNY with the VSG doesn't work but I don't want to go back in for another surgery.  So what about you guys? how did you decide? I can't be the only one who cheaSted on every diet they have ever been on. Did the surgery help to not cheat?

Have you looked into the Duodenal Switch???  It's the VSG but also has the intestinal re-routing...I found this to be the perfect choice for me as it has the best long-term results in regards to weight regain and also you don't have dumping...just have to be more careful about bready carbs rather than sugary carbs.  And, your stomach is a lot larger which allows you to eat more normally, but the bypass is so much that it still burns and passes through enough to make you lose lose lose!!!! :)   Just wanted to bring it up in case you hadn't heard of it (which a lot of people haven't) so you can research it!!!   Oh and about the cheating...I chose the surgery which would not allow me to eat the foods I was most "addicted to"...being bready carbs...I was never a sugary gal....so I figured I should go with the surgery that would have a more negative effect when I ate the bad foods I liked before surgery.  I of course can still indulge a little bit...just had a little piece of bread last night without any negative consequences...but nothing like I ate before surgery. Ok, well, good luck with your decision..... :)

No matter which you choose, you are going to have to change your eating habits for the long run.  Neither will work long term if you eat around them (that's why people are unsuccessful and that is why people gain their weight back).  If you stick to it just as long as it takes to get skinny you will gain it all back as soon as you stop sticking to it.  And you can cheat with RNY and VSG and Lap band and DS for that matter. My RNY has really helped me LEARN not to cheat, but it doesn't save me from myself all the time.  Some people dump, some people don't and actually I don't always dump the way I used to in the beginning.  I believe that either surgery will help you learn because in the very least they restrict the amount you can eat at once, and unlike the diets you were on pre-op that required you to do all the work without very obvious results, these surgeries will help you for as long as you are willing to put in the work and you will see the results right away. This is a tough decision but I think that either surgery you choose can help you be successful.

Hello. I am Jamie. My wife is going to be going through the WLS. Now she is very determined and is going to go get the bypass. I am sorry i dont know what certain things mean here iet. I am new here. So yea... like i was saying. Shes going through with the by pass and she didnt think twice about any of the others. Now with my wife, she is big and wants to become healther  as soon as possible but in the most healthest way. Now about all the worrying with complications...well she has a doc that actually goes through everything while inside. If he sees your gallblatter is not good he will remove it. he goes through everything with a much detail. I am not an expert but when you go and try to find a doctor, see how his work has gone, satistics ( sp ) are and such. ,Sucks you couldnt go out of start to get this done. I would refer him to anyone and everyone if i could. Granted, she hasnt gotten the WLS yet, but in due time. I hope i have helped. in any way possible .

Why not the DS?  It's the VSG with the RNY intestines (to simplify it). jayme

Mainly because the rerouting is the main reason I wouldn't want to get the RNY.

True. I had the same reasons for getting the LapBand - why do something riskier and so permanent if you didn't have to?  If you could get the same results with a less evasive surgery, why would you consider anything else?  That was my logic.  Until my band eroded and had to come out. Through that process, I realized that less evasive usually means less effective when it comes to WLS.  You will always find the exception.  If you try hard enough, you could find the DSer that lost hardly any weight.  If you try hard enough, you can find the LapBander that lost all of their weight (I know there are LOTS of those).  But if you look honestly enough at the long term success rate, I'm convinced that LapBand won't get too many people to where they want to be for as long as they want to be there.

HI, I went with the RNY because statistically speaking, it and my doctor had higher success rates than the lapband. I never looked at VSG or DS because my doctor that I went with didn't do them.  First thing I would like to address is that this is not going to be a diet. It is a life change. No matter what type of surgery you get. Second, if you find a great doctor and check into his statistics and methods, you will likely not have the problems that you are worried about. The RNY makes you change. You don't have a choice in the matter.  To me it sounds like you have your mind made up with what type of surgery you want (RNY) but you are just scared about it.

It all boils down to the doctor. Choose a great doctor and most of your worries will go away. So get out their and do your research. I suggest you go to your State forum and start asking around about Docs and if they liked theirs and success rates and all that.

Hope this helps!
