Mashed Potatoes

So, I'm on pureed foods, and one of the suggestions is potatoes that are mashed up.  Do you think this can count as mashed potatoes also?  Or just a regular potato hat you mash yoursellf?  I found a brand at the grocery store that has 1 gram of fat and 90 calories.... should I try it? Or steer clear?  Also... I know im not there yet, but I was wondering what you can eat once you reach "regular foods" what am i supposed to be watching out for? Low carb? Low Cal or Low fat??? Thanks for your help and good luck!

My nut said our goal is to watch for high protein-lowfat-low sugar foods.  She meant each food should be all of those, not either or.    But the protien part was the most important.

When choosing foods you really have to look at the label as a whole... it also depends on what your nutritional guidelines will be. As you pass thru the different food stages what you look for will change as well... so basically there is no answer :-) Early out you are looking for the highest protein food... over time you balance out more and eat less protein more carbs, calories etc. One thing that doesnt change is sugar and fat - you always want your sugar/fat in single digits per serving... meaning 9g sugar/fat or less - your surgeon/NUT may want yours to be even lower, just depends.

We all laugh at our support groups about the suggestion of potatoes for pureed foods in our "WLS bibles"...it's very high carbs, so personally, I never did it.  The motto is "if it's white DON'T bite!"   High carbs might not make you dump, but it might slow the weight loss.... As for when I got to eat "regular" foods...I was on low carb (less than 40 grams a day) and low fat (less than 30 grams a day).  I haven't really ever been counting calories...with my surgery type though Carbs (not just sugar) effect me...so I have to be careful eating things like potatoes and pasta and such as they have ill side-effects.

Hahaha I know right??!  I could never understand why mashed potatoes were on my pureed list when they stress protein so much!  I suppose if you got the instant kind you could mix some unflavored protein powder in there if you REALLY wanted to msh'taters

I would probably go with the real potato that you mash yourself, but that's just me....Some alternatives: mashed sweet potatoes - lower on the glycemic index - so the sugar is processed more gradually or you might want to dry mashed cauliflower with a little butter and salt - very low carb, but also low in calories and protein, so adding some unflavored protein powder would be a great idea...

My doctor says noooo potatoes unless you get boxed mashed potatoes and you mix protein powder in when you make them
