Hey ladies..I have a question for you all & would greatly appreciate some advice or opinion or whatever on this.  Okay so here is the deal:  I just finished up my last requirement for my INS and things should be sent into my INS next week by my surgeon's office.  The last requirement was a 6-month supervied diet which I completed on Monday and here is the great news..I actually lost 24lbs on it so I know my surgeon will be real happy about that, right?  Well here's my question..I am getting so close to the surgery now & I'm kinda of have questions arise in my mind about which surgery is the best for me.  Originally I really felt RYN was going to be the best tool I could use to help me along this life-long  commitment..BUT as of lately I'm wondering about that BECAUSE..well, I'm only 25 and I already have one child but yes someday I do want more..so I'm wondering since the Lap-Band is easier to reverse for such reasons as say a pregnancy..I'm wondering is that really the best surgery for me?  Did anyone else have these feelings before surgery & how did you make your decision (not necessarily what was your decision) but how did you make it ya know?  Any and all responses are welcome!  Thanks so much everyone!!

Much love,

Tonya

Hi Tonya!  RNY does NOT mean you can't have children.  MANY women go on to become MORE fertile after wls!  My surgeon recommends waiting 18 months after surgery to have a child, if you're planning one.  You will need to be more careful to eat enough and take proper vitamins but you most certainly can have a successful pregnancy after RNY. If that's your only contingency - which surgery will allow a better pregnancy - I think they're all fairly  equal.  Your surgeon and OB-GYN will ensure you remain healthy. It is not necessary to reverse WLS for pregnancy.  I hope that makes you more at ease!

Aw well thank you for replying hun!  I really do appreciate that and yes it does make me feel better.  I guess part of it is the nerves speaking since I'm getting so close in the process to getting the actual surgery BUT my EXCITEMENT outweighs my nervousness by gazillions!  Anyway, thanks again and take care!

Hey!  I plan on having children one day and opted for the RNY.  I'm in in no hurry to have them, but should be stable enough in my protein and vitamin intake to be able to have a healthy pregnancy :) Good luck and Congrats on the weight loss already!

The more things the change, the more they're still the same.

Any procedure that helps you lose weight will equal a healthier pregnancy. I, personally, chose the LapBand so that I can be more nutritionally sound and set for the child. I have  PCOS  that I have to battle as well... before getting to fertility, but that's another story.

I totally agree with you Yelena!  I had a very healthy pregnancy with my daughter and she was not planned at all.  In all honesty, I thought because of my being over-weight that that made me infertile and I was definitely suprised when she came along but I'm thinking she was meant to be here with me because no babies since then and maybe there was a time or two where there should have been? haha, but thats another story in itself.  Anyway, thanks for sharing you feedback with me.

I am 25 as well and had this very conversation with my surgeon.  I have not had kids yet, but I do plan on it before I am 30 (or very close to that age).   My surgeon let me know BOTH lapband and RNY patients go on to having healthy pregnancies. As a super morbidly obese person the RNY is my best option (so that is what I have decided on).  But if my BMI was lower I would have possibly considered the Lapband more seriously.   Both are great tools.   If you go the lapband route, once you find out you are pregnant your surgeon typically removes all the fills that have been put in your lapband and you should meet with the dietician.  Once you have the baby you can begin fills in the lapband again. WIth RNY my surgeon asked me to wait 18 months to start making babies (not a problem....we are wanting to wait a little while).   When I do find out I am pregnant he wants me to call him, and meet with the nutritionist.   My surgeon also told me if I pick an OBGYN that will work with him, he would follow my pregancy and work with them. Just my experience so far.   Good luck deciding on which surgery, for me that was the toughest part. ~Leslie

Yea I am the same way when it comes to the decision about which surgery is for me.  The only reason I was considering the Lap-Band would have been because of this pregnancy issue I was thinking of BUT knowing myself and my habits RYN is definitely the best choice for me. Plus with everyone sharing their stories of having RYN and then a healthy pregnany later on..that makes me feel @ ease.  I'll definitely talk more about it with my surgeon tho @ my final consultation before my surgery.  Thanks for your input tho..I appreciate it Leslie!

It is good that you are going to talk to your surgeon about it again!   Listen to him, but trust your instincts.  You will do GREAT!!!   Keep us posted...
