Eatin Good in the 20's Neighborhood - Thirsty Thursday
Okay people it has been about 24 hours since I posted the other Eating Good thread for Wednesday and if I'm not mistaken there is nothing between that post and this one. That means I killed the board. Yes, I must have scared everyone away. Was it something I said? Do I smell? I leave for a while and come back and everybody stops talking. It's kinda like walking in to a room and everything goes quiet. What's the deal? I know we all have lives (trust me, I know) and sometimes better things to do than post, but what gives? Ah well. I'm sure everyone was still Eatin' good.
7:30am - 1 ka****LC honey almond flax granola bar
9am - 12 oz sf ff caramel macchiato w/ an extra shot of espresso
And then all heck broke loose. I was in class until 10:15 and then had a meeting with another professor about a project. In about the middle of that meeting I get really sweaty and start shaking and feeling faint. I turn green. He looks concerned and I get out of there in a hurry, knowing that my blood sugar is super low. As soon as I am out of his office I reach into my backpack for the emergency baggy of 2 oz peanuts and 2 oz peanut butter M&M's for times such as these. I start shoveling them in as fast as I can, my hand shaking like crazy and me sweating buckets. Check my blood sugar - it is 30. I should be unconcious, but instead decide to start the 12 mile drive home because, and any of my fellow former diabetics will back me up on this one, when the blood sugar is low so is your ability to make intelligent risk-cautious decisions. About 4 blocks later I decide that I am not going to make it in the state that I am in, so I swing through the Taco Bell drive-thru (one of my worst fears is walking into a place and passing out where nobody knows who I am, so I was too scared to get out of the car) and order 2 crunchy tacos (though I am hardly able to get one of them into my pouch, so I'm not sure what I was thinking getting 2). I eat one in about 30 seconds and continue home. When I finally park behind my apartment I can hardly make it out of the car and up the stairs I am so nauseated and dizzy. I open the door and my husband is sitting in the kitchen. "You are green. What's going on?" he says as he helps me to the love seat were I pass out after telling him something about an extra taco for him, low blood sugar and not to call 911, I just needed to lay down.
And in about half an hour I was up and talking and fine again. I think I know what went wrong. I have reactive hypoglycemia which means my body doesn't know how to handle simple carbohydrates. If I eat something with a lot of sugar in it my blood sugar spikes and then just as quickly it plumets. If I don't get something in me (like peanuts and a taco) in quick order I can be in real trouble, but usually if I eat something as soon as I realize I'm crashing I recover pretty quickly. I think that this morning the girl in Starbucks put the real vanilla syrup in my macchiato instead of the sugar free stuff. It tasted sweeter than normal and it made me feel a little sick to my stomach but I figured it was nothing and kept drinking - but looking back I'd put money on there having been non sugar free vanilla syrup in my macchiato.
Anyway...post-pass-out I had....
40 oz water
2pm - 4 oz veggetable ratatoui w/ 1 oz fresh parmasan cheese (that I made myself - you should be proud)
20 oz water
6pm - 4oz beef filled ravioli in tomato sauce
20 oz water
And right now I'm working on 3 oz mix of peanuts and almonds
