ok so I figured that I'd ask this here bc when I was at group the older people would look at me weird when i asked "younger" questions... so my alcohol question is with good restriction for lapband or with any of the other WLS can people take shots?  Like I'm not a big shot taker but if the situation arose I don't want to choke on it or not be able to get it all down.

Nickiejaclyn, I didn't have lapband, but the VSG, and experienced my first go around with alcohol tonight for a friends birthday.  It wasn't a shot, but I ordered a beer, and can honestly tell you, I wasn't as happy about it as I thought I'd be. I only drank about 1/4 cup and really didn't like the way it made my stomach feel.  It could be the bubbles, but I guess after not drinking for about 3 months, and having just a little bit, I was really not even interested in drinking it.  But anyhow, I didn't have trouble with it going down, I just didn't like the way it felt. Anyhow, not sure how much help that is...

Ok I dont drink beer.  the bubbles arent good for you... not that alcohol even is. BUT with my band I have drank and if I take a whole shot at once I feel like its "stuck" you know what I mean.  I usually just take half the shot, then the rest.

Hi!! I found out the hard way that it can be bad.  I took a shot at the bar and I guess it is the fact that you take it all at once.  I mean if you were to sip on it it wouldnt be as bad.  But anyway I took a shot of tequila and then all of a sudden I got a stuck episode.  I got that panic going to puke thing going on ( you probably know what i mean lol) and had to run to the bathroom.  I didnt puke though I just burped alot and then felt better.  I think if you take a big drink like that sometimes you can get air stuck in there.  I have been afraid ever since to take another.   Hope this helps... I can take shots... usually I will drink a shot in 2 or 3 seperate sips because its a lot of liquid... really depends on the shot and how much liquid is in it. You dont have to slam it all at once... you can pull the "imma girrrrrrrrrlll" thing and just sip on it a bit - lol!

Ok, thanks for asking this question!!!  I had been wanting to ask, but didnt want to get the whole... you should not drink alcohol after surgery because of the empty calories speech. good to know...

Oh i hope no one gives you that speech.  Like my doc had me wait two months which wasn't bad some make you wait longer.  Yea its empty calories but as long as you kinda plan it out in advance and its not a everyday thing you shouldn't worry about it  We are young we drink old people forget that hahaha

Haha yea i have experiecned the "stuck" feeling it isnt good.  Yea I don't drink alot but I have gone out a few times since surgery, my doctor had me wait about 2 months which wasn't bad.  I don't drink beer so the bubbles aren't trouble, I have had a few ****tails or fruity drinks and they went down fine.  Thanks for all the responses and i will prob pull the Im a girl i have to take sips... plus all my friends know i got the surgery so they would understand.

It helps to take the shot standing up...But normally the stuck feeling happens. But..if you want to know how it is..take a shot of water and then imagine it burning. I can usually do slow shots, but on New Years, I did a shot of bacardi 151...and it was horrible.  It burned allll the way down, then alllll the way up...through my nose.
