Pre-op exercise

Hello all!  One question I have is...What are the exercises that you did before you had WLS to get toned?  I want to tone my arms, legs and stomach as much as I can so my skin will not sag as bad after surgery.  Any advice that you have would be greatly apprecitated.   P.S.  I don't want to lose more than 20 pounds in the next four months because then I will be under the required weight of my insurance company so toning is ideal if you have any suggestions. Thanks!

I haven't had my surgery yet but I will  be in the next month or so... right now I am doing pre-surgery exercise. I started exercising on the Gazelle -- which is good for weight loss and toning muscles.

2019: 11 years out and maintaining a loss of 150lbs.

First - you cannot exercise away skin... toning your arms, legs and stomach wont help the excess skin issues. By doing weight training during your weight loss and getting toned you can help the *appearance* of excess skin because the muscle will take up more space and give definition underneath. With the stomach - being obese typically damages the stomach mucles, once damaged the only way to repair is by surgery... sit ups/core work etc wont do any good if your stomach mucles are damaged... doesnt mean you shouldnt work on being a strong person but its just a face to face. It really depends on how you carry your weight and how long youve been overweight as well.. some people are much more lucky in the tummy dept than others. On my profile there is a link for the '4 week body makeover' it will work out your entire body. Msn.com has a lot of good workouts under their fitness & nutrition section. You can also find workouts on aol.com and webmd.com. Magazines like Womens Health also have good workouts and you can access them online. Your insurance company only gets 1 weight a year... it shouldnt matter if you lose weight because they wouldnt know unless your surgeon tells them. If youve already been approved for surgery then you can lose as much as the surgeon will allow. I was not 'obese' by the time I had surgery.

I would still add the weight training in - when you are post-op you want to keep weight training and work on keeping muscle and losing just the fat so you are healthy :-) Also since the toning will help the appearance of excess skin thats a bonus as well! Just wanted to give the realistic expectations when it comes to the skin and working out etc - its still great to mix the cardio and the weight training so you get the most out of your workouts.
