Ok, so I am currently in the approval process for the LapBand, I have had 2 visits with the surgeon, my nutritionist, and psych eval... My EGD is next Wednesday. I guess I am curious about two things- the EGD and recovery time. With the EGD, is it painful? Can I go back to work the same day or day after? And, the doc says I can expect to be out of work for 1 week... Is this accurate or should I plan for longer recovery time? OOH, and on a pain level, what other surgery would you compare your WLS surgery to? Thanks... And I have been reading everyone's posts every day. I am addicted and have learned so much! I'm ready and excited for my surgery!

I never had to do an EGD, I just had to do barium swallows - which is where they exam your plumbing by making you swallow a dye that shows up on an x-ray outlining your anatomy...I've been told that endoscopy is not painful, but uncomfortable, but again I haven't had one first hand.... As for recover, laproscopic lap-band shouldn't be too bad, I've been around a few lap-banders who were ready to go in less then a week - so assuming there are no complications you should be fine...As for pain, I had a different surgery (RNY) but for me it was not bad at all, I had pain meds that did the job just fine...Good luck and keep posting away!

I just had the EGD done last week, and it was nothing. My doctors office is particularly ineffective at letting me know what the heck I'm going to do.... so I thought it was little more than another test I've been running through- stress tests, ekg's, etc., so when they called me the day before and told me someone must drive me there and pick me up I was a bit surprised. as for the pain, it wasn't much of anything for me. I had the surgery done in the morning, and I went to class at 2 and was fine- my throat was a little sore/raspy but I don't think I even took tylenol or anything. I did speak a little less. The actual surgery I don't remember- they gave me an IV, and when I was there they sprayed something in my mouth and then told me they were giving me anestesia and then the next thing I know I'm in the recovery room. I'm waiting for LapBand too, and my doctor said that it is "in a lot of ways" a less intense surgery than having my galbladder removed. that one was like, one day of legit pain, and like, 3 or 4 more of slight pain... so I'm thinking it definitely isn't too bad. we'll see though I guess

i never had the egd... but recovery after lapband was great, it did hurt  a little more then when i had my gallbaldder out but i was fine to walk around and everything.  I did take a week off of work,  and as long as u are not required to do alot of heavy lifting and standing for too long you should be fine in a week, but u could always give yourself 2 weeks just in case.
