Dumped :(

So I am 4 months out TODAY! Whoaa! And I feel great, but last week I had a little freak incident. I had a protein bar for the first time and I dumped...real bad! I was so exhausted I ended up missing a class that I had a test in. So I emailed the teacher and she just said to come in and chat. My question to you is...how can I fill her in without getting too personal? Dumping is a gross subject those outside of the WLS world don't understand, nor do I expect them to. But how can I tell her and not gross her out too much? haha Thanks for the help!

Do you want to tell your teacher you had WLS? If so you can just explain that with the surgery we can sometimes tolerate things and othertimes not... you wont know if you can tolerate until you try and  you ate something that your body didnt tolerate which prevented you from comming to class. If you dont want to tell your teacher about WLS you can say you are under a physicians care (and doing a medically supervised diet if you so care to say) and had a problem after following what the physician told you to do and that prevented you from comming to class.Or something to the effect of medical issues... your teacher cannot push you to disclose why... Im sure your surgeon would be happy to write you a note if you need one.

Thank you! I never thought of asking my surgeon for a note, I was going to go to Health Services on campus... but they are not the most sensitive people and I dunno if they would actually write me a note. But thanks thats great, I really appreciate it. Wish me luck! Hopefully my teacher will understand!

I had that problem my first semester back after surgery.  I forget what it was but the dumping that followed was wicked and there was no way I was going to make it to class. I just told the prof (whom I was not on very intimate terms with - some profs I am close to and tell them about whatever - others, not so much) that I had a medical condition that sometimes causes me to get sick after eating and that's what happened.  And he was fine with it.  I would just make sure to have good attendence otherwise and usually profs will understand, but if you are habitually absent it can be a problem.  So your best defense is a good reputation / record.   I hope your teacher understands, if not, then go for a note from your surgeon.
