VGS (verticle gastric sleeve) or RNY???
So as a follow up to my previous post about going out of state. My doc that is out of state said that that was one of his concerns also. He said that is why he would preffer i get a VGS. So any one out there have a VGS? I know at least one of you must.
Also some questions for all of you who have done the research on VGS is it as good as the RNY? Will I end up gaining my weight back in the long run (or is there a higer precetage cahnce like with the lap band)? Does it take much longer to lose the weight with a VGS? Can the VGS be done laproscopically?
Hi Rita,
I'm just 3 weeks post op from having the sleeve done. I was really concerned about the whole rerouting of the intestines, so I opted for the sleeve, because I wasn't thoroughly all into the lap band, although I know people that have had great results.
As far as specifics about the sleeve, I've been told that the weight loss totals are comparable to the RNY and since the surgery removes part of the stomach, the part is removes contains where the hormone Ghrelin is produced, which is the hunger hormone. I can honestly say, I haven't been hungry since surgery other than one meal a week ago!
My sleeve was done laproscopically and I returned to work 10 days after surgery although I did say I would recommend at least 2 weeks, just because I feel more comfortable now.
There is a Sleeve Forum on here where there are many people 1-3 years out, some farther I think and they have a ton more info than I could ever give.
Anyhow, check that forum out, and maybe I'll see you as a fellow sleever.

I'll second everything she said! I had the sleeve done a little over a month ago and I'm loving it. The VSG forum is a great source of information! It doesn't take longer to loose the weight, it's comparable with the rny in that regard. And I had mine done laproscopically. I have just 5 tiny scars that are already started to fade away really nicely. I didn't want the malabsorbtion or rerouting of the intestines, so that's why I liked the VSG the best. And plus, it was easier for my surgeon to do, so I let him be the judge for me :) Good luck and keep us posted with what you pick!
