Having surgery on Monday - Question about um....colon cleanse?

Happy Saturday everyone! I am having my RNY surgery on Monday and have a question.  My sister had the same surgery last year and was required to take milk of magnesia the day before to um...clean out her system.  Sorry, I know this is not the best topic, but I need to know.   My surgeon didn't say anything about having to do this at my last pre-op appt on Tuesday.  I talked with both the pre-surgery nurse at the hospital yesterday and she didn't mentioned having to do this in her instructions either?  Dr. K did say that I can only have clear liquids tomorrow and then nothing after midnight.   Should I go ahead and take the milk of magnesia anyway?

I didnt have the rny, but i have taken mild of magnesia in the past and if you do decide to take it take a small amount because some brands take a while to kick in and then others take minutes, also if you take to much of it, it can take a while to kick in.  But if you really want to make sure, Im sure there is a number you can call to double check. Good Luck with your surgery on Monday!!

Wow that's really surprising because for RNY especially, they need everything as uh, clean as possible.  All I can say is cleaning out your system can't HURT.  Here's what I was to do.  My surgery was on a Tuesday.  Starting on Sunday I was only allowed clear liquids and jello.  Sunday afternoon I took 2 Correctol (or any other laxitive...it's just what I had in the house). Two were quite effective lol.  Monday I actually had to run a LOT of errands for my surgery, docs and preadmission and stuff.  Monday afternoon I was to take another two pills.  Let's just say there was NOTHING left by Tuesday morning before I went in at 5am. I think any typical bowel prep would work, milk of mag, laxitives, Fleets phospho-soda, etc.  As it's the weekend I'm not sure if you could call anyone and double check but I'm really shocked you weren't advised of this.

I did the FLEET phosphsoda thing the night before my surgery and it kicked in after 15 minutes and was done about an hour later.  I was also on a liquid diet for 2 weeks and then clear liquids for the 3 days prior.  I was AMAZED at how much was still in that needed cleaned out.  It can't hurt

Thanks all for the advice.  I never had time to check back here before my surgery.  I was busy cleaning the house, doing laundry, and visiting with family and friends.   I did go ahead and do the cleanse.  I figured it would be easier on myself after the surgery if I had clean bowels and it has :)
