Suggestions for the Pre-op's about to be Post-ops?

I feel like there is so much I NEED to be doing to prepare, I'm just not sure what it all is!  I have all of my appointments scheduled.  I just feel like I'm missing things.  Anyone have any suggestions on ways to prepare myself for the few weeks after surgery?  I will get all of my 2week post op "meals" (aka liquid protein!) from the Drs office on Thursday.  What will I need in the hospital?  At home for the first few weeks?  I know not to stock up on anything just yet.  I do have all the vitamins and such that I will need.  Chewable, Vit C, Calcium, B12, Flax Seed, etc.

oh man! this is such an exciting time!  when i went into the hospital, i had all my liquid proteins and stuff stocked up (eww isopure and chicken broth haha) but as for the hospital, i had packed a neat little bag the hospital had given to me.  in it i had put a really comfy robe (really great to put on over that wonderful hospital gown esp when you go to walk around) comfy loose tshirt and sweats, slippers, a few magazines, my cell phone and charger (to let everyone know i was doing a-ok) and my spirometer (the hospital gave me one a few days before surgery), and a pillow from home.  You won't be needing much else in the hospital.  When i got home, i made sure i had medical tape and gauze pads to put over my incisions and changed them about 1-2 times a day.  I had my prescription of liquid tylenol filled and i kept my pillow with me at all times helped so much when you needed to get up and/or cough, laugh, etc. i also found it way easier to sleep in a recliner, much easier to get in and out of without putting too much stress on my core.  hmmm anything else. thats all i can think of right about now. hope this helped a bit. --laur

I packed a lot going to the hospital

I took a robe, some comfy pajamas, books/magazines, my ipod, gasx, and I believe the list goes on.

Honestly all I ever ended up wanting was some chapstick (which of course I didn't have, so my mom had to run out and get some).

I feel like as far as pain went, I was in no real pain after the surgery. I was very sore initially right after, but the next day I was fine, just really really really sleepy. I didn't even watch TV while I was there. With all the pain meds and everything being put in me I think I was hardly ever awake, and its such a short amount of time you will be there (hopefully!)

of course it can't hurt bringing the stuff I did, just in case.

Pre-op I put together a surgery notebook... I included in it all the information from my surgeon and from my NUT including post-op instructions. I printed out the pouch rules for dummies and put it in there. I made myself a weekly weight loss chart and a chart to keep track of my inches. I also started to collect recipies for the different stages post-op - when they popped up on OH I jotted them down. Basically it was my bible for the first few months. I carried it around so if I had a question about something I was told I had the answer right there! For the hospital I took way to much - here is what I actucally used... my pillow, chap stick, cell phone, face cloths, face lotion, tooth brush/tooth paste, hair brush, deodrant, lotion. They gave me socks to walk around in at the hospital - you do NOT want to wear slippers and bring them home - hospitals are GERMY the less you take, the better... what you do take wash in HOT HO****er when you get home. You need a comfy outfit to leave the hospital in - for pants something elastic/draw string... jammies are great! To pass time between now and surgery start working on walking... making exercise a part of ones daily routine is a struggle for many - by starting now it will be something you are more use to each day. If you havent been on any sort of pre-op diet start to cut some bad foods out of your diet or at least cut back on the quantity - regular sodas, fried/fast foods etc. It will help to 'detox' a little before surgery so you arnt in such a shock after - if you have to do a 2 week liquid pre-op then dont worry about that part... just work on the exercise.

Take all your measurments! I know this is simple advice, but everyone told me to do this, but I thought I really wouldnt care about it so I didn't. Now I really wish I had. It would be nice to know where I started
