So I havent had my surgery yet.  Im attending my first WLS seminar Monday.  I am just wondering if maybe my Dr. might not want do to my surgery because I am younger.  I am 22.  I was just wondering what kinda emphasis Drs. tend to put on your age even if you do meet the criteria.

My surgeon agreed to do my surgery when I was 18 (I actually had it when I was 19) and I was treated as a standard patient.  He of course made me go through a psych eval, but that was standard practice.  If you know your stuff and can prove that you can be compliant, you shouldn't have any issues due to age.  Good luck!

I think the cut off age for most doctors is about 18, though there are a select few that will do surgeries on people younger.  I really don't think you are going to have any problem.  I was 20 and my surgeon didn't appear to care.

Shouldn't be a problem as long you are over 18, younger then that and some surgeons are hesitant because adolescents may not be mentally prepared to commit to the lifestyle changes and regimen that you need to adhere to in order to be successful...Actually, most surgeons will point out that complication rates go up as age increases, so the surgeon will probably consider you a lower-risk patient...

Thank you everyone for your input! I felt the same way about being lower risk since I was younger.  I just know how some people think that were younger so our metabolism is up and its easier to loose weight ...yadda yedda yadda.  Im really looking forward to surgery and lifestyle changes! Thanks again!

My doctor said that my age worked in my favor, because I have a lot of years to benefit from the surgery, and my health hasnt snowballed into really bad co-morbidities yet. Good luck with yours!

You shouldn't have any problems... i started all my apps when i was 20 and had my surgery at 21.  I think like what most people say the cut off it 18 and our age is a bug factor but its a good factor.  We are legally adults (scary I know) wether we are 22 or 45, they cant not perform the operation based on our age because we are over 18... they may not perform it for other reasons but they cant discrimate against us because of our age. (I'm taking a Law class at my college now and we are talking about age discrimination so thats how I know this information lol)

I dont think age should matter. Everyones different.  I tried to get gastric bypass when i was 16, and the doctors gave me the ok.. and were going to do it, but my mother backed down at the last min! (hated her then)  Then i tried again at 18, and got the ok again- and here i am 8 months old, and  120.5 pounds down

I have never felt like my doc did not want to do surgery on me because of my age, infact i felt like it was the opposite, I always got the feeling that the doctors and my insurance company was happy that I was being proactive to take care of my health problems now rather than waiting till i was much older and costing the insurance companies even more money.  My surgeon was happy that I wanted to change my life for the better!

i had my approval from my referal when i was 22, i am 23 now and having surgery in a month. i would say as long as you fit the criteria then you should be fine.
