Calories per day
How many calories (on average) do you consume in a day?
In an informational packet my dietician gave me, there is a page outlining the amount of calories, carbs, fats, etc. a person needs after surgery. For 1-3 months post op at least 800 calories, 3-6 mos at least 1200, and 6 mos and on it says "based on individual needs". On Wednesday I will be 3 months out, and it just seems like thats a lot of calories to be taking in, so I would like to know what everyone else is doing.
Have a happy Saturday!
That sounds about right. I'm sure at the 3-6 month mark they aren't expecting you to get 1200 calories instantly and all the time - you just are supposed to try. Probably at first you'll be working up to it. My plan had me getting up to 1200 calories around 10-12 months out (before that it was 800-1000). Once I got to goal my nutritionist upped my intake to 1400-1600 calories for my maintaining. It is going to vary on what your individual needs are (your activity level, how much intestine was bypassed, how much you weigh...). Remember that you can't eat so little forever or else your body will get used to it and your metabolism will slow way down. That is probably why your nutritionist wants you upping your calories so soon. Hope that makes sense!

I am almost at 3 months out as well. My nut said to get anywhere from 800-1200 cals/day. I'd say I average 900-1000 most days. I know what you mean because 1200 does seem like a lot. When I was counting calories to lose weight pre-op I would usually aim for 1200 calories, but our bodies work differently now!
800-1000 calories a day, is my doctors recommendation I also had just over 5 feet of intestine bypassed (not sure if that is a proximal or distal surgery) during my surgery... I am supposed to get 80-100 g of protein too :)
Your surgeon or NUT should let you know what they expect

The amount of calories not only depends on surgeon/NUT preference but how much you had bypassed. Typically those with proximal eat less than those with distal.
I had proximal procedure and my requirements were to consume 600-800 calories starting at 10 days out... basically it started out low and went up over time closer to 800. At 6 month I was upped to 700-900 calories and at 11 months 900-1100. Currently at 1.8 years out I eat 900-1100 calories. The majority of my surgeons patient when they hit maintenance eat about 1000-1200, with some as high as 1400 but thats it.
