Super Bowl XLII - Fun Facts and Who Are YOU Rooting For?
Hey guys, Are you ready for some football! Here in AZ the excitement is palpable. The stars have descended upon the Valley of the Sun and the whole town has been abuzz with sightings of A-list celebrities flocking to all of the big parties....But, now it's time for the main event! Remember, today is the second highest food consumption day of the year, behind thanksgiving. So make good decisions and don't neglect or abuse your pouch! Any good ideas to help battle the urge to indulge at those Super Bowl parties? Share them here... And of course, Who are you rooting for? Me, I'm originally from NY so, even though I'm more of a Jets fan, I'll be hoping for a GIANT upset! Super Bowl Factoids
Some quick facts about the Super Bowl from the NFL:
- Think we have our priorities in order? More people watched Super Bowl XL (141.4 million viewers) than voted in the 2004 Presidential election.
- There are 7.5 million parties on Super Bowl Sunday (National Retail Federation), and, of course, Paris Hilton and Britney Spears will try to hit about half of them.
- 1.5 million TV sets will be sold the week leading up to the Super Bowl (National Retail Federation) and it's no surprise sales of big screen TVs generally show a fivefold increase during that time (National Electronic Dealers Association).
- The Super Bowl is the top at-home party event of the year, ahead of New Year’s Eve (Hallmark Cards, Inc.) and the new Michael Vick-inspired Torture Your Dog with a Fork Day.
- Super Bowl Sunday is the second-largest day of food consumption behind Thanksgiving (American Institute of Food Distribution), which makes it not a surprise at all that antacid sales increase 20 percent the day after the Super Bowl (7-11 stores).
- On Super Bowl Sunday, Americans consume 8 million pounds of guacamole (California Avocado Commission). Rumor has it nearly two thirds of all the avocados sold in the United States are purchased during the three weeks leading up to the Super Bowl, but Urban Legends Guide David Emery says that statistic is exaggerated.
- Super Bowl weekend is the slowest weekend for weddings (multiple sources) for one simple reason. What bride in her right mind would want to start off her marriage by making her husband miss such a big event? I mean, it is the Super Bowl after all
I'm rooting for....um....the comercials?
I like me some good old fashioned high priced Super Bowl comercials. But seriously...Giants all the way, only because then I can say my beloved Packers lost to the Super Bowl winners, if that makes any sense.
Another fun fact - approximately 1/3 of all the food consumed on Super Bowl Sunday happens at the annual Frailey (my maiden name) Family Super Bowl blow-out-pig-out event. Well, if you ask me anyway. Were having about 15 people here all together and there is SO MUCH FOOD in my mom's kitchen that we actually had to take food out to the fridge in our garage and put things in my sister's fridge in her apartment because we ran out of space! Would anyone like to know HOW I got to be 300 pounds by age 17? Hmmmmm.....
Help. Me.

Amy 293/140 - AT GOAL!
We did have food outside last night. I made this "strawberry pretzel salad" (and the use of the word "salad" is REALLY ironic when refering to this dish that includes 1 cup of butter, crushed pretzels and sugar made into a crust, tons of sugar, frozen sliced strawberries with added sugar, cream cheese, strawberry jello and cool whip) and we left it outside for a couple of hours to set the jello (this was before my mom had the brilliant idea of running food to my sister's apartment...). For the last Super Bowl party we had we stored the cans of soda on our porch, but some of them exploded because it got too cold. Global warming my a$$
And poor you - below 32 at night you say? Most DAYS these past couple of weeks we've had below zero temps by 10-20 degrees.
So are you going to a Super Bowl party?

Sorry I'm a late reader, had to take the kids to the "Hannah Montana 3D Concert", since apparently going to the actual concert wasn't enough!! (BTW - I had to jump through some major hoops to get those damn tickets!!! - Ahh! Kids... they just have no idea!

I'll be all about the Giants come late this afternoon. I can't STAND the Patriots. Especially their coach, Belicheck. Man I'd like to take a baseball bat to him!
I'll be rooting for the Giants, just because I can't stand the Patriots. I also am a huge Bears fan (yeah, last year's game pretty much sucked after the opening kickoff) so I'll root for the NFC team. Here in Nashville I know some people who know the Mannings and from what I've heard they are good guys - so go Eli.
I don't care who wins. I'm a college ball person...they are too full of themselves in the pros. But I'm watchin for the commercials....and the food...oh yeah, liquids... :'( Guess I'll just smell all that good food in the kitchen. So far they've made nachos w/ chorizo (OMG it smells good), hot wings, pizza, and beer brats! DAMMIT lol Guess I'll enjoy my tomato soup and be quiet now.
