Seeing old friends

Hi all! I am new to the boards and am just starting my WLS journey (about to submit to insurance). I am curious about when you see old friends or acquaintances after surgery and have lost so much weight, they obviously ask you how you did it, what do you tell them? I so far have only told my parents, my boyfriend, my roommate, and my best friend since i was 3, that I am pursuing  WLS. I'm not sure what I want to tell people afterwards... I know it's all personal choice, but I am just curious what you guys tell people.

TT/TL/AL/BL with Aug 6/15/2012! Looking good so far!

I am 100% honest whenever anyone asks - how did I lose the weight? "I had gastric bypass".  I have only had a handful of negative responses, otherwise all of the others have been overwhelmingly supportive and positive (and I have told A LOT of people).  I hope if you decide to tell other people you are surprised at just how supportive and encouraging they are.

I thought more people would ask but not too many have. When they do I always tell them I am banded with pride. Usually people just say..."Wow, you've lost weight. You look great!" And I just say "Thanks! I've been working on it!"

At first I was humiliated about having the surgery and I didn't tell anyone. I denied it to the hilt! But it got to the point where I hated lying. I did what I had to do. Now I sort of pick and choose who I tell, but I don't deny it. It is all a personal choice. Some will support you, and others will go off on their beliefs about it. You just have to take it all with a grain of salt. Best of luck!!!

Well, everyone I want knowing about my surgery knows, most everyone else lives in my community or near and I run in to them at the gym or the people at work see me dieting and see my gym bag at my desk so they don't really ask they just compliment me on how great I am looking, and I take the compliment.

Timely question.  I was scared to tell people but I finally write a blog on Myspace about it.  I'm tired of hiding.  It's amazing how many people have told me (in day-to-day life) that they've been bypassed too and how happy they are to have had it done.  I know there will be negativity (especially with me being a "lightweight") but what can ya do.

My situtation is a little different - I moved to NC 5 years ago so most of my long time friends are in Florida or have moved to other states and I dont see them often. I had surgery 1.7 years ago so I only have a handful of close friends here and I told them all. As for the people I dont see often... many of them never saw me at my heaviest, my weight has gone up and down so much. When they ask how I lost weight I just say that I see a nutritionist and exercise. If I see people here where I live that I really dont care about I use the same answer... I figure its none of their business. However, if somebody asks me who I know would benefit from knowing about WLS I always tell them.
