Booze!
So I'm almost a year out and my surgeon doesn't have any problems with us drinking alcohol. He just said be careful.
Now my question is, I'm not a really a big drinker anyway, but I do want to have a few drinks when I go out for my upcoming birthday. Pre-op I was never into the fruity drinks anyway. I always just took shots of liquor. haha, yea it's what I prefer. I don't dump so I'm not afraid of that really either. I just was wondering if anyone else has had like a shot of vodka, or jager, or southern comfort. Well, really anything. Tell me your experiences with shots. Well, tell me your experiences with ANY alochol. Please? Thanks! lol
I've also thought about maybe trying alcohol in the safety of my home first. lol I'd hate to try it for the first time out in public in case I have a bad reaction or SOMETHING.
well i have taken shots of almost everything since i have had my surgery. you have to be careful tho, well at least for me, shot**** me pretty hard. if i have any i space them out throughout the evening. some burn my pouch though. so i try to stay away from those ones. i know alcohol is different for different folks. just be safe and go about it slowly if ur going to. be prepared though, some people on here are going to tell you not to drink at all. some are a little uptight about that subject here, but try not to listen to it. i say tho, if ur going to drink, do it very very slowly, especially if ur going to do shots. u'l prolly feel a lil buzz after one. well have fun on ur b-day

If you're going to drink - try stuff at home first (you got it). I know you said you don't dump, but it would really suck to find out that you dump on shots while out with friends instead of in the comfort of your own home. Also make sure you're with someone(s) you can trust because you are likely to get more drunk on less and faster than you ever have before (though I feel sobered up quickly too...). Make sure to have something in your pouch (this might be the one time it is a good idea to drink while you eat a little something), because alcohol can cause your blood sugar to spike and crash, which is just not a good idea.
I don't drink often, but what I have tried are mostly mixed drinks (mojitos, screw drivers, spiced rum w/ apple cider and so on), and the alcohol in them sometimes is enough to burn my pouch. I had a very anti-alcohol stance because I think drinking with the sole intention to get drunk is stupid, irresponsible and dangerous - not to mention it makes our age group look like a bunch of irresponsible slobs who are not responsible enough to handle weight loss surgery, much less alcohol - but if you are smart about it, there is nothing wrong with a drink now and then.

I can't do it with the mix they sell in Wal-Mart (it is really too sweet for me), and I ask the bar tender to leave out all but 1/3 of the normal sugar they would use - so that leaves me with sprite, sierra mist or club soda, rum, lime juice and crushed mint leaves. I haven't found a lot of bars that can make mojitos, but my husband was a bar tender in a former life so he whips me up a really good Amy-version mojito now and then.

Definately check out the drinking at home first. Make sure when you go out you have a DD as well.
Drinking... for me I get drunk QUICK... a few sips of wine and I feel it within a few minutes... I also sober up VERY quick. Shots are fine and dandy but you are better off finding something to sip on if that is how booze effects you... otherwise you will end up drinking quite a bit in order to 'maintain' your drunkardness :-) Its also EXTREMELY dehydrating... I suggest drinking water before and having water in your hand the entire time... drink as much water as you can with the shots/drinks otherwise you will feel like ca-ca the next day. If you use to get horrible 'drunk munchies' pre-op.. then plan for that post-op... make sure you dont end up at a diner with friends or in a drive-thru... have something on hand at home to nibble on before you go to sleep.
As a side note to avoid hangovers here is what I do... I base this off online research I did and modified some. About an hour before drinking I take a b12, they say 1/2 way thru drhinking to take another, I dont... however I take another before going to bed... and get tha****er in. They say to also drink a little fruit juice (with no alcohol) during the night because alcohol depleates blood sugar. I find the b12 works pretty well... or bcomplex works fine too. Sometimes instead of taking both of my vitamins in the morning, I will take 1 in the am and save the other to go with the pre-going out b12.
I promise Im not an alchy!! hah... sounds like it right? I really dont drink all that often but found even after 1 drink I can end up feeling like crap. I always make sure to eat a little something before going out as well... seems to help.
If you are going to do a mixed drink opt for soda water or diet coke.. I know its hard with the carbonation but mixes/juices are loaded with sugar/calories... a good mix is to use soda water, splash of sprite and the alcohol (I like captain morgan or cherry vodka with that mix)... some places may let you bring in your own diet soda.... you can also buy some SF mixes online that are single serve so you can get the alcohol mixed with water and add the drink mix yourself (like for a margarita). The no sugar alcohols are also a good choice - vodka, tequilia... you can research which are better than others... the last article said out of all the empty alcohol calories you could drink the no sugar alcohols like vodka, tequilia were a better choice than beer, wine or high sugar liquor.
