Exercise Restrictions?
OK guys, I need your input.
First of all, I had my first f/u appt yesterday and lost a total of 25 pounds since surgery, totaling 35 pounds since my first weigh in!!! Yay!!!
Anyways, my surgeon is really liberal and says that I have to exercise restrictions. That I can do whatever I feel comfortable doing. I have no lifting restrictions or anything. He said to just listen to my body.
So last night at derby, I was walking around, squatting to pick up cones, just generally moving around and my friend who is post op flipped out, saying I'm going to get a hernia or worse.
Were you guys on restrictions? What were they? I thought hernias were mostly just an open RNY concept? I'm freaking out! If I have to wait over a month to really work out, I'm going to freak out. lol

I don't usually advise going against a doctor's advice BUT....hernias seem to be one of the most common complications with WLS (even with laproscopic procedures). They also seem to be one of the most frustrating to deal with - usually painful and often requiring surgery to repair, SO if it is at all possible to wait just a few more weeks to let things heal up completely I would by all means wait. I know you said you would freak out if you had to wait any longer, but I think you would freak out even more if you wound up with a nasty hernia. If it is bothering you that bad, maybe you can think of some ways to get moving and exercise that would be less risky in terms of risk of causing a hernia. Maybe you could do some skating without the derby part....maybe some endurance type training - hey you'll get strong and be able to whipe the floor with your competition when you get back!
I was restricted for 6 weeks from lifting anything heavier than a gallon of milk (8-10 pounds). But by 2 months out I was cleared to do things "as tolerated". My best advice to you would just be to really pay attention to your body. For the next couple weeks if it hurts or is uncomfortable at all, just back off for a while. Something I was cleared to do right away (like 4 hours after my surgery) was walking. If you want to get moving - walk. It'll help your weight loss and circulation and all that jazz.

you should defenitly listen to your body, if it hurts at all stop. although it may be deciving that the lap wounds are healed your insides where they did all the work isnt healed yet. you should not be lifiting more than about 10 lbs at a time. the last thing your going to want to do is going a little harder than you should and end up with a hernia. believe me i have had from a c section actually because i didnt listen to my dr. however since your dr said you could, i would but just not to an extreme. also great job with your weight loss thus far your doing great!
