So..I want to hear peoples opinions on the two surgeries...what do you know about them? Do you think one is safer than the other? Which one proves to have better outcomes? I chose to get the RNY Lap. Bypass on the 20th...and everyone from family, friends to church people..are saying, No no! Lap-Band!, No no Anne RNY!!! Throw out your opinions/experiences....NOW :-) Thanks guys! Anne

I didn't have either of those surgeries, but I can say that as long as you have done your research, you reserve the right to tell everyone that you are an adult and they need to shut up. Lap-band surgery has a lower chance of complications, but a higher rate of failure, than RNY.

I had RNY because at the time thats what my insurance covered. I dont know too much about the lapband, just the basics.. but honestly would say if I had the option of lapband I would have looked into it. Why? reason being I am young... RNY is for life and is a major decision - they really do not know the long term effects of the surgery. If you decide on the lapband and it doesnt work, then you can always get the RNY later. I think it also depends on how much weight you have to lose, personally I think lapband is an excellent choice for lightweights... it may even be a better choice for those who havent been obese for long periods of time. It could also be a good choice for those *****ally cant commit to the major changes that a more major surgery entails. As for one being safer - I believe the lapband is overall safer.. both have their own set of complications but the RNY is a much more major surgery. As for outcomes - I believe one is just as successful as the other... with either surgery one can reach their goal. I think the 'statistics' state the overall percentage lost with RNY is higher than Lap... I want to say RNY is 80% of excess, lap around 60% dont quote me thou... but many people reach 100% lost with any of the surgeries.  Did your surgeon have an opinion? Many times the surgeon can tell you if they feel one surgery is better than the other based on your age, weight and medical history.

I agree,  I suggest going on all the boards and get a feel for the surgery.  People who have one surgery seem to give out alot of misinformation about another.  Not sure why its a war of whats better, But only you will know whats best for you. Good Luck

I went with RNY because I was terrified that one day I would change my mind. I wanted it to be irreversable. I was addicted to sugar and carbs - even came down with diabetes. I wanted to have dumping as an immediate negative feedback if I reverted back to my carb-hoarding ways, and lastly, the stats my doctor gave me showed a little more weight loss with the RNY...
