Ok so I need some advice....My dr. has recommended an IUD for me. Since we all know the pill is not absorbed the same way since the surgery and I refuse to be on the patch (had migraines before, don't want to worry about blood clots now!). I'm also not ok w/ the NuvaRing so  I just want some testimonials from all the women out there who have IUDs. I'm 24, still in college, no kids, don't plan on having them for at least a couple of years (gotta finish law school first), and currently I don't have a boyfriend, but that could change at any minute. Any advice? (I am posting this on a few different boards...any advise would be great! Thanks)

I have had a IUD for 5 years now and LOVE IT !! I dont want to sound corny but it is the best thing since slice bread....lol....I already have two friends that have gotten it after me ...I talk them into it and they Love it also....I was on Depo (the birth control shot ) but after gaining 60 pounds in 2 months I stopped taking it and started looking into an alternative to hormonal birth control and the IUD seemed like the logical choice..Hope this helped  = )

iv had my iud in for almost 3 months and so far im not impressed.  i have bad cramping during my period which is lasting alot longer now and i spot all the time.  i have also been having these awfull dreams that it will cause me to be infertile in the future like it tearing my uterus, having a tubal (which you are at increased risk having one) and my tube bursting and other random things but thoes are just my fears.  i am hoping that it gets better because i really want to like it since its so convienent but so far just hate it

i just want to put my 2 cents in too. first of all i wish i could have the iud, however my cervix is too small, however while talking to my dr about the iud some things that you said makes me question if its the right choice for you. now this is just what i have been told, so dont get mad at me and again listen to your dr. i was told the iud should be placed in someone who already has a child. i was also told (by more then one dr) that the iud is for a person in a mongomous realstionship. not saying your sleeping around, but you did say your single and we all know how guys can be. tthe reason is because if you were to catch a std it can go into yor uterus and and actually cause you to be infertile. i hope your not offened at all just wanted to share my knoweldge on the iud. also i would never recommend the patch, i got pregnant on it. what about something like norplant, now that birthcontrol is out of date but i believe there is something that is newer with the same concept.

I'm not offended at all! I need all the help I can get to make this decision!!! I didn't ever think about an STD having I guess "easier access" to my uterus. I'm not sleeping around, but I do know condoms would still be something I need to use, until I am in a monogamous relationship. I guess maybe I'm just going to write everything down & present it all to my ob/gyn next month (my pcp is the one *****commended the IUD) I do want kids, just not right now. So clearly I've got a big decision to make.

The IUD is my next option... so I'll be watching this thread carefully.  Depo didn't work for me.. unfortunately, I'm part of the 10% that is does the reverse to :(  So... the nurse talked me into the ring.  I wouldn't normally consider it... because of obvious reasons, but I'm pretty desperate.  So I've had it about four days and finally see some change in my bleeding.  But its still weird lol. Good luck, chick!

The more things the change, the more they're still the same.

Warning may contain TMI!! I considered an IUD and the patch (but you must be under 180 lbs), and did chewable BC FemCon after right after surgery(so sick!)...and then My gyn and I decided on the NuvaRing. I love it! You put it in 24 days take it out for 4 and then repeat. It is also a low dose hormone-99% effective...which is important because as you lose alot of weight your fat starts to release a ton of stored hormones. So a higher dose hormone can create a lot of heavy bleeding problems. In my 2nd month I did have several weeks of spotting between cycles, but all of that normalized-and is fine now (They say it sometimes takes 3 months to get you completely on track). Now my cycles are DEFINITELY shorter and lighter-this last one was less than 5 days. I still am careful and use condoms usually--No preganancy 2 years after surgery!-but you know we can all slip sometimes lol...and trust me the frequency of  sex in your life is likely to change after surgery!! hehe. Don't know about how they work with WLS... But... I SWEAR by my NuvaRing. I LOVE it... Every doctor that I've talked to says the same thing about IUDs and that is that you need to have already had one child to consider it. I'm still considering it because I've already had my first... I know that the concept of the NuvaRing is well... but it really is not all that bad at all... and is right up there with Depo and IUDs on ease of use. I got it because I am forgetful and sensitive to hormones, but it really helps me stay regular and I haven't gained any weight (I've been on it for over a year) and it works...

Hello, I just wanted to tell you my experience with the IUD. First my doctor only recommended it because I was engaged she did say I needed to be in a monogamous relationship in order to get it because of the risk of infection.

Also She said its best for people who have had children already. Well I have never had children but she said she would try. After having it in for about a year I started having break outs on my face ( I have never had an acne issue even as a child) I also started having really bad cramping and strong periods so I went in to my OB and she took an ultrasound of the IUD and found it was placed correctly and couldnt find any problem so over the next few months my acne and cramping was getting so bad and my periods were stronger than before and I was told I wouldnt even have a period on this IUD. So anyway one day I went to pull out my tampon and out came my IUD too. Yes the IUD had been working its way out which would explain the cramping.  I would not recommend it it was a lot of pain for tooo long.
