I feel weird asking about this...

My surgery is next Tuesday (the 13th) and this morning I had my pre testing at the hospital. On the questionaire I filled out there were questions about smoking, drinking and illegal drugs. I don't smoke cigarettes and haven't drank in over a month, BUT I occasionally smoke marijuana, which I told the nurse. She told me that a lot of marijuana is laced with other drugs and the day of my surgery if they find any other drugs in my system they will cancel my surgery because they can interact with the anesthesia. I am terrified! The marijuana I smoke is not crappy so I really don't think there was anything else in there, but because the last time I smoked was this past weekend the THC will definitely show up. The nurse kind of alluded that the marijuana is not the problem, its the other drugs that can be in there. Does anyone else have any knowledge or experience with this? Help?!

Not sure what to say... except dont smoke between now and then... if they find something, well they find something... they dont, then they dont.

*shrug* personally I wouldnt have told them about the marijuana smoking... that will now be on record for life... you never know when stuff like that can come back and haunt you. It is important to be honest with medical professionals etc especially when it comes to major surgery but I dont think this one would have been that big of a deal... especially if you only smoke occasionally... if you smoked often they would have needed to know but you could have just said you smoked ciggs. This is just my opinion!

She is Very Very Right... U say you dont smoke crappy kind... But honostly YOU HAVE NO IDEA what maybe with it.  No idea.

And if you cant stop it completly then I think it should be postponed.  You are proving to your provider that you just arent serious.

Good Luck.

My advice...same...stop smoking now and drink as much as you can to flush out your system. But I wouldn't worry too much about it now, its done. I have a friend who smoked before and after surgery but never admited it-and it never showed up in any blood tests. You have to do a specific one to test for drugs. So don't freak out too much. if they ask again-say you stopped.

Go to a health food store like GNC and find a "cleansing system" (tell them what is going on they will tell you exactly what to buy)  i smoke and found that after my surgery that it helped me with my nauseau.  But, in the future, dont tell them.  the bottom line is that weed does not interfere with most medical issues.  and you will be branded for life, not to mention the lectures.

Thanks for the advice..I think the nurse was getting at the pot I smoke may be laced with other drugs which could interfere with the anesthesia, but a friend of mine grows it and it's good stuff, so I'm not really worried about unknowingly ingesting other drugs.
