Hi everyone!! I'm Becky, I'm 21, and on 9/12 I got a call from my insurance company telling me that I'm approved for RNY!!  I'm so pumped..Tomorrow my surgeon's office will call me and I will find out my surgery date, which will hopefully be mid to late October.  I'm so excited to have found this website--I feel a lot better being able to read about people in my age group going through this and what to expect and everything.. I'm pretty calm and excited about the surgery, but I do have these two fears: 1.) The anesthesia won't work and I will be awake during surgery, unable to move or talk! (this fear comes from me seeing a show on TLC called "Anesthesia Nightmares") 2.) I'm nervous about the excess skin situation post weight loss. I've been wanting to ask people in my age group who have had the surgery: is the excess skin really bad? My doctor told me that because I'm young and have a lot of skin elasticity the excess skin might not be super bad, but I still wonder to what extent it will be and how it will look... I'll definitely take excess skin over obesity though!! It's so good to be here!! Talk to you later..

Welcome to the board, Becky!!!!  You're going to be awesome!  I just know it :)  Your fears are completely normal... 1. I was scared too... and tried sooo hard to stay awake as long as possible so they knew I was aware of my surroundings.  All I had was something to drink and off to sleepy land I went.  I was in the land deep... they had a problem waking me up lol.  You're going to do great! 2.  The skin issue depends on how big you are to begin with and how long.  We're young so the skin does pop back a bit faster and better.  I was 400 pounds and had a huge panni... I am now 12 weeks out of a tummy tuck.  It all depends on how you scrunch up lol.

Ask away my dear!

The more things the change, the more they're still the same.

Hey Welcome to the board Becky! Congrats on beign approved for RNY keep us all updated...  Dont stress yourself out over the anesthsia, it will be ok! I was scared to, mainly becuase after they put the IV in me and let my husband in the room right before surgery, he decided to TELL ME ALL ABOUT THAT SHOW!  and How I could be awake and not beable to do anything.   I was like thanks Bendy, now I am scared ****less....  BUT all was well.... I fell asleep so fast, and woke up and thought I hadnt even gone into surgery yet..  I really cant tell you about skin,  I haven't lost enough weight.  My husband lost 100lbs and His skin is loose, like you can pull it, but you cant tell its loose.

O MY GOD BECKY, LOOK AT HER... err WELCOME!  Congratz on the approval.  I'm pre-op myself... just a little bit behind you in the process... waiting for my surgeon consult/insurance approval... already done with the pre-op weight loss, evaluations, blah blah blah.   I heard some horror stories about anesthesia too... but everyone can react differently... so until it happens, it's best not to think about it.  But hey, on the bright side... if something nightmare-like does happen... it'll be great conversation at a dinner party...hah Skin is talked about alot of these boards... some people haven't had problems and it snapped back... others elected to plastic surgery.  Again since everyone reacts different due to length of time obese, age, genetics, etc...it can go both ways.  If you're in your 20s, you can probably bet that you won't have too big of a problem with it.  It's very very important to exercise regularly post-op and pre-op in order to program your muscles that they need to get toned up...when the fat disappears, the muscle can fill in some of the void (ya not all of it) but it's noticeable to the droopy skin look.  Also, I've read alot of people say it can take up to 2 years after you've hit your goal weight for your skin to have maximum reaction to the weight loss.  This is also the reason why surgeons tell you, you need to have weight stabilized before you get plastic surgery.   Good luck!

I was very heavy for most of my young life, about as heavy as I am now which is 5' 11", about 300 lbs. and size 20.  At the end of high school/beginning of college which was 4 years ago, I lost a lot of weight and dropped to a size 12, and everything snapped up and you really couldn't tell I had been so overweight.  Hopefully that will happen again this time!!
